john bingham Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 i have an idea in my head of pairing up early in november and rearing 20 ybs then racing or sending them as trainers with old birds in the later part of the old bird season as it would be to cold earlyon what are allyr thoughts on this thanks
PIGEON_MAN Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 As long as they are in a crate on their own shouldnt be a problem, but make sure they dont go in with the old birds.
Guest pigeon82 Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 you must be nuts because you dont get any rings till january lol plus if theyre hatched before december then technically there not 2010 pigeons
Guest spin cycle Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 i have an idea in my head of pairing up early in november and rearing 20 ybs then racing or sending them as trainers with old birds in the later part of the old bird season as it would be to cold earlyon what are allyr thoughts on this thanks they'd have to have oldrings on wouldn't they ? meaning they couldn't then take part in yb racing...so can't see what you'd gain. effectively they'd be latebreds. i allways wonder the cut off between 'latebreds' and 'ybs'...as it is arbitarily decided on when the rings arrive.
Guest pigeon82 Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 i have had people mention this before saying theyll put 2 rings on their legs one ob ring and 1 yb ring every1 tries but never does it lol ;D ;D
Guest spin cycle Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 wasn't there another dodge where foreign rings were bought ( if released earlier) then registered into loft name later?
Guest pigeon82 Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 i think so but then when i was listening to a dvd recently some dutch or belgique person was talking and stated that he gets his yb rings at the end of november i think so really would these birds count if you bought rings from them for your birds over here it must eligiable
DAVE1975 Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 i wud love to pair up early and breed early but like you say we dont get ring untill jan so its no use
edwards Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 you must be nuts because you dont get any rings till january lol plus if theyre hatched before december then technically there not 2010 pigeons bang on the classed as 09 birds i know a lad that has great races doing this
john bingham Posted August 28, 2009 Author Report Posted August 28, 2009 i would use this yrs rings 09 they would have 4 or 5 racers between 128 miles and 250 miles
pjc Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 can't see the point or benefit! Breeding when the stock should be resting with the weather prob not realy being favourable either. You've then got to house them, feed them and train them as youngbirds which if kept natural would also be heavy in the moult towards the end of the old bird season. You've then got to have somewhere seperate to house your proper youngbird team!
joe61 Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 i have had people mention this before saying theyll put 2 rings on their legs one ob ring and 1 yb ring every1 tries but never does it lol ;D ;D people were doing this 20 odd years ago and still doing it today its legal ;) oh happy days
Guest Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 There is nothing wrong with the idea, in fact my son and I have considered it. As long as the bird carries only ONE ring (that of the year of it's BIRTH) it could race all the short races in the Old Bird Program and then (if allowed, and my fed does allow this) race as an old bird in the young bird program. It will however not be possible to win YB prizes, but they will gain invaluable experience from racing with the Old Birds. Another advantage is that youngsters bred this way would be on a NATURAL darkness system, due to the seasonal daylight hours available. I am unsure however how it would affect the moult by the time the young bird season commences.

peterpau Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 Don't see any problem with this other than breeding in the cold of winter. I don't pair mine till March. I am just about to hatch a round now that will start in June and the hens will go to the old hens national 270 mile. Been doing this a few years now. 2nd sec 20th MNFC and a September 07 hatch flew Bordeaux 517 mile for me on 1st August. So not yet 2 and done a 500 miler. The pigeon I clocked from Bordeaux was however an 08 May hatch from the same pair. These will be ready ready for Tarbes next term.
Guest pigeon82 Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 i would use this yrs rings 09 they would have 4 or 5 racers between 128 miles and 250 miles iif you do this you cant race in the yb races you wont gain nothing from it to be honest
john bingham Posted August 28, 2009 Author Report Posted August 28, 2009 i see wer yr coming from but surely u could still send them as trainers in the yb racers and still would learning but my idea is with the young birds losses getting worse to try something different to try and have an team to race they wouldmaybe learn more in those 5 racers from 128 miles to 250 than in the ybs which are 52miles to 128 miles
Guest pigeon82 Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 i understand that but our ybs go upto 244 miles and they are at 239 tomorrow i dont think it would make a difference but if you think it will work try it and see and let us know and in our yb races you can only send first 3 races as trainers and thats it
