Guest joshdonlan Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 I have moved some birds to a new section. They are 09 bids, but never been out. How long would you leave them in the section, before trying to settle them? And what would be the best way to settle them? Thanks and all the best for 10

Guest bigbok Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 yer me two get a few rounds of them and then buld a nice mesh boxe to house the min during the day so they get used to the outside world as well
jimbhoy29 Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 i need to settle my 09 birds i just built a avairy so they can go in and out plus ive got them all down on eggs just now
Guest joshdonlan Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 would having some birds already broken out at the same time be of any use? And would you suggest to let them out in small batches say 4 at a time? :-/
Guest IB Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 I designed my loft so that there is only one way in and out for all the pigeons in it - through an open door which gives access to the aviary and all the sections. Just had the last of my six 2009 introductions out today. My routine is I leave the bird to get used to me, the loft, and the rest of the birds. When it is settled in, I choose a calm clear day with sun, then let the others out for a fly, pop the bird in a basket and sit it outside in front of the loft until the others come back, and are down picking around the basket. I then take the bird out the basket and walk slowly through the other birds toward the open doors, stopping a couple of times to judge whether the bird's minded to fly through those doors, or into the wide blue sky. Usually the bird will go through the doors, then come back out to join the other birds on the ground, pick about as if born here, and go back in with the others. Thats what happened today. If I do lose a pigeon trying to break it, I prefer to do it at this stage when there are no knock-ons, like down on eggs or youngsters. I lost 2 out of my 6, annoyed at that, but that is a price you have to bear if you don't keep prisoners..

Guest joshdonlan Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 rollers bakes mate, so it is for that reason i dont want to get them on eggs
ally mac Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 The rollers are a lot easier Josh, I never had a problem breaking any to the loft, got that confident after a while they would be flying within a week of their arrival. Used to sit them on the loft roof in a wee cage a couple of days and lock them in the trap a few times. Always put them back in the loft through the trap too. Al.
Guest joshdonlan Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 Cheers Al. Do you still have any?
ally mac Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 Cheers Al. Do you still have any? No they are away on loan now Josh, concentrating on the racers now
Guest joshdonlan Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 Racers are my long term goal along with the rollers. I just dont have enough time for them at the moment
Guest joshdonlan Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 how long would you leave masking tape on the wings and how much of the wing would you tipe, just the primaries?
