Guest Vic Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 I just can't believe that the Amal birds did just under 50 mph today. Years ago we would be looking for 30-40 mph, maximum. I have studied the wind map, and there was no south wind on it whatsoever. BUT ARE THESE MAPS ALWAYS RIGHT? The clouds up our way were showing E.N.E. Have the S.D.U (SHORT DISTANCE UNION) men from the past, taken pigeon racing to a different level? since their own SDU demise.
Guest Vic Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 May I add to my article. I am talking about the "Miler Men" that were somewhat looked down on ,by long distance fliers. When we were kids and tried to keep pigeons, we were told by our parents that pigeons were unlucky. This was because of the havoc caused in some of the unsuccesful milers households, where some would gamble their weeks wages on them. I was born in Buckingham street , running into Nethefield Rd, and milers in them days had their lofts situated on the rooftops. But when the Old property was demolished , it also took the SDU to the outskirts. They tried to keep it going, with no avail. So into the 60's onwards, they moved into the long distance scenario, boosting clubs memberships. In fact one club in Liverpool boasted over 100 memebers at the time. I will add how this influx of Milers have ruined the game Later.
Guest Vic Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 Seems my third instalment was, moved out pronto. Maybe I was stepping on somebodys toes, Who knows? But Vic will get the third one in. AND try to put ALL the grabbers to shame.

mark163 Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 i for one think it is a time they are a changing vic get use to it pigeons will get even faster here today the wind as been that strong from the e/ne the leaves and branches have been blown of the trees yet the UNC winner is doing 1306 vel from lillers now that is fast
superstar Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 Ever thought that medication/Treatments Etc have played a part in the good old pigeon getting more durable Vic? The winner in our club was doing 1279, very good I though as a howling gale was blowing from the NE with bits of tree and stuff blowing everywhere at the time! I didnt think our own Vel of 1212 in the conditions was bad till the result came out, no cards this week! lol.
Pompey Mick Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 Here on the South Coast, the North Roaders were in excess of 1700ypm yesterday from Ripon and today from Messac the South Roaders are doing in excess of 1700ypm with a var wind. Pigeons never fail to amaze even established flyers.
Guest Vic Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 Yes! The"shorties" 0ver the last few decades, have certainly shaken the corn tin, and perhaps have improved the pigeons pace. BUT they have brought with them, their quest for money, which was never there before there arrival. Golden Rings @ £25 each is common thgese days! Breder Buyer sales, Where one third of the takings , go Where? And to cap it all we now have the One Loft racing syndicates. Too many of us are looking at the money making side of it these days, in my mind all because of the greedy miler scenerio. Vic.
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 we were doing 80 miles an hour 2277 yards per min 2291 dow west
