would say straw...hay is notorious for dust and moulds.

what should it be treated for? I was going to spray with lice spray.

petshop bagged stuff says its been treated for lice ectra , but if in a petshop with animals in then  it will no doubt be infested again , empty in a bin linner and add some mallithan liquid shake ;) and open up to dry ;) then give birds it or can use lice spray

if you cannot keep nests bone dry, leave straw out, never use hay, feed it to the horses

if you get hay from pet stores..pre -packaged then its probably had the dust extracted..check though.

hay id never use just gets wrapped around feet and birds pull eggs out of nest and more likely to bring wee beastys into loft ;)

straw spray it first use to use either virkon or jeyes prefer sand in the bottom though and tobacco stalks

took the words from my mouth , rose :),dry straw with, a good spray with virkon s ,should be ok,,  but for some reason the birds like carrying tobacco stalks [thats what i use] but was allways thinking of using  pine needles,, but" thinking" was as far as i got :)
