i used to put ybs on darkness, as soon as theire weaned, they wre darkened at 5 pm and lightened at 9 am   i used to keep them on this , till the longest day, make sure the loft is well ventilated, and not overcrowded,,, hope this helps.

I prefre to darken my young bird AFTER they have got a good hang on flying, my feeling is that if the go on darkness right away after weaning is is more difficult to get them flying good once the body moult sets in.

My birds are darkened at 1 in the afternoon and I take the shutters back before I go to bed at night as I feel it is very important for the birds to see the sun rise, as all out races are liberated just after sun up in the morning.

I DARKEN DOWN AT 6PM & OPEN UP AT 7.30AM. AS LONG AS THE NIGHTS ARE LONGER THAN THE DAYS BY ABOUT 1 TO 1.5 HOURS, AS SOON AS THEY ARE WEANED, WHICH IS JUST STARTING NOW & OVER THE NEXT TWO WEEKS. KEEP THEM ON UNTIL END OF MAY....

I darken mine at 5pm to 9am from now till longest day the week before we start leaving them 30 mins longer per day. For me darker the better but dont cut off  the ventilation.

I darken down straight away, on weaning. I darken from 5pm till 8am as this suits my work pattern. Have had a great deal of success with my darkened youngsters.

All the above is OK, but does anyone who works and flys on there own have a good plan for darkness YBs. I work 8.30 to 5pm so the above would be impossible for me. I work 15miles aways from work so it would cost a fortune to drive home every dinnertime to open the loft up.

hi sbelbin,i see its awkward for you, but you could use a time switch, as alan says you could set it to come on for say  11 am or therabouts, that would let you get the ybs out when you come home from work ,cleaned fed and watered then darkened again at about 7pm, remember the clocks will be changing shortly

I work 8 till 4 30 so i darken them at 5 on a night until 7am.they will still go through the moult ok as long as theres more darkness hours than light.
