tedweb Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 gday thanks to all those who have replied to my questions...I'm getting a lot out of your suggestions. normally I have my birds out twice a day for around 45 min but with work and shortening days( we are heading into autumn down here) will one flight a day be enough to maintain fitness for the winter races? cheers ted
pigeonscout Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 Lock them up for winter let out once per week for bath.
batusai Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 Lock them up for winter let out once per week for bath. I really admire your birds pic....
Guest Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 Think 'down here' might be southern hemisphere, Australia perhaps. You can only exercise the birds to suit your own circumstances, if you can only get them out once a day, then once a day is enough.
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 I open loft mine all winter my traps havent been closed since november ( I was out of town ) I have lost 1 to a hawk but thats all they are spectacular I think I could go down the road twice and then race 500
jupiter_19630 Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 My trap is opened twice a day winter and summer. Can be difficult in the winter when it gets light late and dark early. Luckily self employed so if not busy can start late and finish early. I don't hold with locking my birds up for the winter. The only time they dont get let out is when its foggy or there is snow on the roof.
Beanz Posted March 11, 2007 Report Posted March 11, 2007 Our birds go out as much as possible, winter or summer, birds are meant to fly not be locked up in my opinion.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 try to get mine out as much as possible, all year round, i feel if they are kept in during winter they are easier prey for hawks when they start getting out in the spring
stevebelbin Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 Its not possible for me to have the birds out in the winter, apart from on a weekend, if I open the door and they fly out on a sat or sunday then thats ok but most of the time they prefer to sit in the aviary. It doesnt take long for a pigeon to regain fitness so im not to bothered if they dont get out properly until a month b4 racing when the days are getting longer and the birds appear more active with the milder weather. Started to let mine out last week and there already flying ok, and once the racing starts they will be taken with me to work (15miles) everyday ;D
jimmy white Posted March 14, 2007 Report Posted March 14, 2007 i like to get the birds out in the winter , maybe not every day but , but if the weathers half reasonable their out, loft cleaned and in, i think this is better for distance birds , but with sprinters would prefer to keep an" edge" on them, and maybe out once a week, for bath etc,
ken Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 first transporter toss today 55ml came well my 3rd bird was a late bred 2 toss first toss was 15 ml not bad for a late bred
Guest CS Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 Lock them up for winter let out once per week for bath. That's what a lot of top flyers and fanciers use this way,,, best way
peterpau Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 Didn't anyone notice tedweb says its heading into autumn and he's getting ready for the winter races. Many may lock'em up in winter but if racing is in the winter one fly a day would have to be eneough. It must be very different racing in the winter to a loft lit in the dark.
