having just joined the nfc .I have just paired my two best yearling's aiming for the fist national race from Forges on the 19th of may(My birthday). The reason is i am aiming to have them on 10 day youngsters for the race .I intend to race the cock only . he will get the next three club race's prior to Fourges then a week off then the national. The week after i am going to send the hen in the middlewich two bird open from the same place i may resend the cock depending on the condition he is in.They will then be laid of from racing till next year.I am going to get plenty of training inbetween now and then out to 40 mile plus club race's i am aiming for one day on on day off in the training. I am not going to use any special feed till the week before when i intend to use a Carb loading method. Now this is the furthest race i or my birds have ever raced so i will let you know how it go's.the birds are a Staf van reet cock and a braspenning hen.Any tips or advice would be wellcome Both birds did the full youngbird programme apart from the last race

340 mile ive just been looking it up :).

As long as they have plenty of work under the wing should be ok

Rule of thumb. Double the intended distance training and racing and at least one race of half the distance.

My yearlings will get 2x20 mile chucks 85, 122, 135, racing then first channel race Falaise 247 second chanel race two weeks later Alencon 297 third Saran 330 then Tours 356 that will see them finished for the season 350 miles is eneough for our yearlings.

Best o' luck Pete.........

Thanks Pete thats some good advice they have had two 40 mile chucks this week and have come home pretty sharpish beating me on both occasions they will get another two 40 milers then a race this weekend (90 miles) i will keep the training going next week but then start to slow the training down just keep them fresh with the odd trainer here and there and a club race on saturday providing the weather holds out.On a side note i have seperated this pair from the other 6 yearlings i have to race and paired them .When i train i train them all together and these two have beaten me home on both occasions where as the rest seem to be a bit after me a check cock has beaten me once and a pied has done it twice as well but since i have paired these two they seem keener than ever to get home.

Bad race this week guy's ive still got the pair i am hoping to send but lost three others and half hour behind the winner.Ive had to take a real hard look in the mirror and realise my birds are athletes not pet's.The food has been cut down and they have all been treated for just about everything.Heres looking to next week.I didnt send the hen but after the treatment and food being cut down i actually fancy her for the weekend i can allready see the difference in the bird's.

DEFRA rules say you can't send the cock to France 2 weeks running!

Look's like the middlewich two bird will be skipped then :) forgot about the quarantine ruling.Just getting them back from the first race will be a great acheivment for me.

Tell ya what Rose you make me feel as if I'm too early.

Should be no reason Ronnie can't do OK with his yearling as it wasn't exactly an easy race at the weekend.

Like to think she's coming well though before sending her.

Best o' luck.
