mine start at 8 mile 3or 4 times then 20 mile then 30 then 40 then 60 if they do each toss ok then i move them onto the next stage if they make a mistake they stop at that stage.once the first race(113 mile) they get 2 30 mile a week we race our ybs to 330 mile so they have to be well schooled.this works for me i have won the scottish national (2005)and had 8 in the top 100 last year(6th upto 100)

I do train young birds but often feel that its more for my benefit than theirs. Before i even put mine in the basket they are flying away from the loft for an hour or so and i think that they learn far more ranging themselves than my training.

Training to me depends on what experiences the birds have had for example took 49 yesterday got 1 cock followed by 24 together and another 23 spent the rest of the day working there way back independently, 1 still missing. The 23 that all worked back throughout yesterday will have learn't more than any training tosses i could give them.

Given normal circumstances i would be confident that those birds with a bit of luck will now be able to sort themselves out form the first race on Saturday from 76 miles.

if you didnt give them a training toss then how would ve the 23 worked back ,yi need to take them theoir to work back lad ,dont understand what yi mean  ;D ;D ;D

Don't think it was that hard to follow.

My point was that for the pigeons that spent 3-4 hours working their way back yesterday taking them on more 10/15 mile tosses is a waste of my time and theirs.

cheers

No they have had a number of tosses previously but now they've had this experience i see no need to trail down the road anymore.

The point of my post was to say that the birds and there experiences should guide you as to how much/little they need training. There is no need to be rigid in your approach.

Some posts have said that they have 10 tosses at 5 miles and then 10 tosses at 15 miles etc - whats the point if the birds have been roaming for a couple of hours at a time they obviously know where there going.

training pigeons aint about learning them the way home they already know that its just educating them into doing what you want them to do fly home the fastest and shortest way possible  ;D ;D ;D

Training is also about getting the birds fit flying around the loft and raking isn't half as much exercise as actually getting taken down the road and racing each other back at high speeds

Paulo you don't need to train young birds to get them fit there fit already or at least they should be. Only my opinion but i would rather see mine racing up and down the village morning and night rather than continually sticking them in a basket.

Sammy how do you TRAIN them to fly home the fastest and shortest way possible i'm intrigued to know? don't they do that anyway.

think the most important thing about training is to get them used to a basket, learn to eat and drink in them and get used to flying straight out the basket when the flaps are opened

a member in our club tried that, he had 4 back out of 46 on the day and hardly got any more back at all, racing untrained young birds is just asking for trouble

Well I hope you are all right in what you are saying about YB training, cos I've been following your advice.  :)

Back to basics for me as training that I did before 20 to 40 miles didn't seem to stand them in good stead as yearlings, dropped like stones after first few races past 3 years.

Its been a stop-start period for me due to other commitments, but I have had them out to just 20 miles  8 times, this week in all weathers, blazing sunshine, flying from rain, thunder & lightning, flying thro rain, and that's it finished now until basket for 1st race on Friday night for Coldstream, 62 miles.

The other changes I made was vaccinate them May rather than July; train with a club mate who flies farther than me with a lot more pigeons , to get mine to break from the 'big' bunch; train in evening released 7pm time, rather than am., seem to make straight for home rather than go on tour, longest they have taken is around 45 minutes.
