Guest Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 1 1\2 " - 2" max............they are easy nuf to make tho, makes life much easier i've got newspaper under mine, just lift grill up,roll paper up ,fresh paper down & job done got the plastic one's raised in n/boxes to s----t alls onto tray ,same with y/b box perches ...........
darkknight Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 aint it hard for the birds to walk around ???
Guest Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 no they're fine on them ( ave'nt said owt anyway) ;D, the y/bs when weaned are fine on them also, mine are raised bout 4" off floor.........
darkknight Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 lol i would have thought there feet would slip between the slats
Guest Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 no never had them do that, even the squeakers take to em quickly ,bit cautious at 1st,but after day so,they are fine,if you make the gap narrower the s--t does'nt fall thro ,which is what it's all about ease of management, brush twice day & thats it,only change the newspaper once week in all (when birds seperated),every other day when breeding ........... plus they are unable to get to any spilt corn (therfore can't eat soiled food, eliminating infection)
darkknight Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 well if you have any pics of yours in use i would like to see them when you have time mate thanks for the info
Guest Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 you're welcome, will post some pics of loft/sections & birds ,soon as - good luck ...........
pj1001 Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 We also use them and have found them very good. What you will need to do though is to build a feeding table or make a removable tray to place you feeder on otherwise you will find when you feed the birds with time a lot of the corn will fall through the slats and this can encourage vermins as well as being wastful of feed. In our young bird loft we have a trapping and feeding area which we use Versa Lag floor granules on and this is used for feeding and playing around with the youngsters which we find is useful and make them tame when we feed them a few peanuts etc there. Hope this is of help. PJ

If the grills have a 2'' gap between each length of timber what is the width of the timber the birds and yourself walk on. kev
Guest Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 just measured the grills, the gap is 1"between slats which are 1/2"wide x 1 1/2"deep,( so birds & me walk on 1\2 ") they are joined by 3\4" dowel which runs thro centre each slat -widthways ,grill comprises of 4 dowels placed at 6" & 12 " for full length, hope that makes it a bit clear ....r.v. woodcraft & jones have a pic of them in thier ad in bhw ............
Roland Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 Had grills once, 1 inch tubing and about 2 inches apart. Loft was 2 foot of the ground and ventilated all around the top. Great, had wooded ply shelfs on floor to drag out and clean. One big mistake I made was I didn't fence it in with say 1/2 inch mesh ... cat's used to sit under it... took a while to twig thick me. Worked a treat ... Now? ! I have a normal floor with Guinea pig on it. Kepts them up, and I'f habe dale half inch thick instead of V perches. Drop down shelving to water and feed them on...
