Which is the best Long Distance racing?

Hi Rose

Why do we fall for it all the time this breed that breed,  think they must see us comming.

We had a bird reported last year in france, the fancier who had the bird rang to let us know he would like to keep it  and asked what breed is it, told him it's a van-reet  and if he had got it flying out to give it a go ,

He said that he would not let the bird out and would put it in his stock loft, we told him not to worry if he lost it we would breed him a few yb's.

The reason he gave for putting it in the stock loft was,  you English like to keep your birds pure,  and over here we mix our breeds together to get better racers.

Hope this make's some sort of sence,

 Jane

Jane, I'd picked up a similar view in the pigeon press, Continentals think 'English' pair up by strain, van x van, bus x bus, etc; while we in the UK think the 'Belgians etc' pair up best x best, irrespective of strain. Think its a bit of stereotyping myself.

Humble opinion: Strains might be the distant base of a modern day family of pigeons. Families of pigeons are what we have nowadays. The late Jim Biss was mentioned... a well known name with a family of 500 in his clearance sale ... surely not all the same Strain? The late Andrew Deans... a well known name with a family of ? in his clearance sale ... surely not all the same Strain? Both these fanciers swapped birds .... recall bidding for a mealy cock, Deans x Biss cross .... and these winning fanciers regularly swapped birds with other winning fanciers too....

So if you are looking for distance pigeons, I would advise that you look for the winning Families ... the fanciers appearing on the National results every year, and try for birds from those winning families... and test & blend them over time for a winning family of your own..

I dont worry about strains I breed family to family to keep breeders and I race these then I breed these back to parents for stock and cross them to race I also dont worry about what distance they are supposed to fly, I put them in the basket if they come home fast they breed if not they are replaced !!! I dont worry about ruthless culling I am into ruthless racing I own a couple of birds that are terrible handling birds and most assuredly would have been culled if not for my method but both are multiple race winners and have bred winners quit worrying about strain and race the birds dont go to stock lofts to buy birds, buy birds from guys that win races, if the breeder can't win with them how are you going to ???

What about Jos Thon'e or Ghesselbrecht ??

How did you do with the Jos Thone's birds ?

Have you heard about Jos Thone won 1st + 2nd National race this year ?

A friend of mine from Belgium,

Sent me an article about Jos Thone, I thought it would b interested for you(Slugmonkey) and fanciers into Thone Birds.  :)

Who doesn’t know Jos Thoné from Niel-bij-As?  Probably somebody who has been living the past 15 years on Mars.  Jos has won everything he can win... but those who tought that they had seen everything from this wonderboy will be astonished.  On the international race from Narbonne he won the  1st and 2nd international against more than 4000 yearlings.  His two winners are also the two fastest racing pigeons from more then  10.000. Belgian opponents (old birds & yearlings together).

"Sedna I " 1e International Narbonne - 5026055/04

The racing hen who won the 1st international Narbonne 2005 is named after the last discoverd planet in our solar system. Sedna won already the 206th national St Vincent against 10.022 yearlings, the 7th semi-national Jarnac against 5005 yearlings. It is clear that she is a real top quality racing hen.

As preparation of this season Sedna was mated in february and she moulted two young birds, afterwards she was raced on the widowhood system. The medical supervision is for a big deal based on the system of BIFS and veteranarian Ferdinand Vandersanden. The food mixture of the Thoné Special is composed by Jos himself and produced by the company Beyers.

When we take a little bit closer to the pedigree of “Sedna”, we can find from fathers’ side international and national winners from Bordeaux and Barcelona. From mothers’ side we can find “Sumo” in her pedigree. Those who know the Thoné pigeons better, know already that a son of “Sumo” became a world class quality breeder. In the United Kingdom a grandson of “Sumo” became already the international winner of Dax and another grandson of “Sumo” became 2nd international from Dax. .

The first three pigeons wich were clocked on Narbonne are all grandchildren from Sumo. And than you have to know that children and grandchildren of Sumo already raced outstanding on the shorter distances.

"Sedna II" – 2nd International Narbonne - 5026206/04

Sedna was just arrived from the international race and Jos could see already his second pigeon arrive from the same race. “Sedna II” is also a racing hen wich is raced on the total widowhood system. Narbonne was the 11th race of “Sedna II” on the 4th of april she already won a price pro 10 from Chimay. “Sedna II” can be called an all-round ace racer.

When we take a closer look to the pedigree of “Sedna II” we can see that the mother of “Sedna II” is a full sister of the mother of “Sedna”, her father is already grandfather of the 1st Marseille in 2002 and we can also find the successfull Barcelona-strain of the Thoné loft in his blood.

"Arinze" – 17th National Narbonne - 5026010/04

Most people would think the 1st and 2nd international, now the success story has come to an end, but not at the loft of Thoné. After the thrill of the 1st and 2nd international or there was allready “Arinze”. Based on the announcments by telephone he will win the 17th national. “Arinze” is just like “Sedna” and “Sedna II” a top quality racing pigeon. As a young bird he won already the 4th national La Souterainne against 16297 young birds, on that race he lost 3 minutes by hesitating when he came into the loft. In that same year he had already won the 95th national Argenton against 23.078 young birds. Like we said before also “Arinze” is a grandchild of “Sumo”. . With this information we can say that the international race from Narbonne 2005 was dominated by the “Sumo”-dynasty.

Coda

After Jos has won the 1st national Brive hens in 2004, Jos told me that a national victory was a nice experience but that an international victory was one of his biggest dreams. And now his dream became truth. After winning this race from Narbonne, we know that this will motivate Jos to do even better in the nearby future.

I think Sumo is one of the best long distance breeders (in second generation) of the last years (what's in a name  ;) ) He is grandfather of the 1st Int. Dax (In England) 2nd Int. dax (also in England), 1st and 2nd Int. Narbonne (on the loft of Jos himself).

I don't have peds in front of me but we own a grizzle hen that is a half sister to another Thon'e bird a Verca Laga winner I have written about her elsewhere we bred her with a son of the Schellikens " Black Devil " I had 4, 3 of which are race winners although I belive this is fom the " Tony " side we got the Black devil from Tony Mellucci I think maybe we missed the boat on her as a breeder as we paired her with 4 cocks and this is the only mating that ever produced any performance from this hen we got her by way of Gis Peters I have since stocked 2 of these birds one of which is in the breeding pen with a 4 time winner from Pinnacle  the other was culled I plan to breed the one hen we have back to " Tony " and stock these.

Considering most of the us birds are bred down from European champions I dont think the results would be any diffrent look at some of the international races such as the sun city race the U.S seems to consistently place high in the standings or look at what Ganus did when he moved to Europe I do think that we have a diffrent style of racing but I do belive our birds are EVERY BIT AS GOOD being 40 miles or 700
