chrisbonnie Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 im just wondering who has, or if anybody has a small number of birds that race happily? my father only has a small back garden, so will only ever have about 30 birds MAXIMUM, i see most fanciers around of massive lofts, with an immense amount of birds, is it actually possible to race without that amount of birds?
Guest Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 in all honesty ,1 bird (one) is all thats needed to race . but i have raced with just 2 (two) only have a small set up myself . quality not quantity , (me still trying to get quality) but will achieve 1 day . andy.
NW USA Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 I'll let you know in 2 months, youngbird team of 20. Most others in this club fly double that or more.

I started with 10 birds then lost most of them during training, have started the season with 1 bird and still have the same bird, people in the club are sending 20 at a time and never getting 20 back, so far im doing well as long as it keeps coming it will keep going
p charlton Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 my set up will be at the most 16 young and 8 pair of natral and a few stock in a rabbit cages
Guest gladdo Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 THIS AINT A MASSIVE PROBLEM AS I HAD 9 COCKS LAST YEAR AND DID VERY WELL WITH THEM AGAINST PEOPLE RACING 100 COCKS .... MIKEY DUBLIN IRELAND...JUST BE SELECTIVE AS YOU NEED SHELVES FOR THE GOOD ONES MIKEY
Guest peter.j Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 the max ive sent is 8 but no matter how many you send only1 can win it

Delboy Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 I once raced 13 pigeons to a 24 ft loft, 6 were 1st federation winners and 3 had won the section at SNFC level. I won club and fed averages as well. Quality, not quantity but now I have far too many birds.

chrisbonnie Posted August 11, 2009 Author Report Posted August 11, 2009 ah, thats grand, i dont feel so overwhelmed now we bought 8 good stock birds yesterday, coorememas, and i think Karl Brock??? so hopefully once they breed, next year we`ll have some decent ybs to race with, cant wait
Delboy Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 Came back into the sport in 1989, I raced 6 ybs and was in top 6 every week winning all pools every time. Club had 42 lofts. Sent 2 to yb National and was 2nd section
p charlton Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 thats all ive booked 8 late breeds not ready yet lol

pjc Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 It all depends on how you plan to race, if you can build a team of 12 quality birds they will see you through the season if handled the right way. A very good friend of mine only ever started the season with 12 and bred 10 yb's, he was always the guy to beat in the club, fed and combine.
Tony C Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 It may take you a little longer to get there than the big team fancier but your experience will be a better one. Enjoy
steve d Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Im only racing 10 youngsters and won midweek and finished 2nd fed 1200 birds, won 1st and 2nd Saturday in club and 3rd and 19th fed 7932 birds, it aint the quantity its the quality :) :)
Guest triballofts Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 hi i once raced 7 widowhood cocks and won 4x1st and 7x2nds and never lost one ive only got 6 for next year as ive had a year off this year (health reasons ) so ill see how i go next year
Guest Owen Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 I have room for 16 cocks but 12 is my number. Often, I send yearlings one week and old cocks the next. And to be honest I love it when I win races and take the money against the mob fliers. As has already been said, a small number of well managed birds can hold their own anywhere. I also have the laugh when I am asked why I don't fly my hens, except as young birds. All my hens, without exception are winners in their own right because when I select there are always far more than I want. So obviously I only keep the winners. This year I have a lot more young cocks looking for places in the Widowhood Team than there will be places for. What a fantastic position to be in. All of these young cocks are bred from winners and obviously some of them will not measure up. But, as time goes on, the winning genes are building up more and more. In due course I think I will be in a mouth watering position because I should have a small team of excellent quality. Happy days.
gooner Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 at the end of the day it does not matter how many birds you have if they are quality, when i was young dad and myself flew in a club with fanciers sending 70 and 80 birds and overall the club sending 400+ but we still won alot of 1st and all the averages and we never sent more than 10 birds also when i started up up here in norwich iwas in a bad position and raced an entire season with 10 cocks and by the end of season everyone of them were card winners. so imo its quality not quantity yopu want

gooner Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 was one of them wonky eyes graham lol most of been ! if i remember ther wasnt to many other poeple taking cards that season apart from my self lol yes mate it was wonky eyes and i think i only ever sent 6 birds to each race
Guest Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 We race a team of 20 no more, our losses are small and our lofts happy. We fly distances up to about 350 - 450 max depending on whether YB's or Old
