As far as im concerned the only way to hold them is excercise them but don't train them until May when the weather has changed, give them a couple of come back races then push them all the way as 2yr olds.

The previous year was a disaster with them, never trained in year of birth, and trained with old birds!!! dropped like flys, only got 1 of them now, but he went to every race upto 350 last year, so fingers crossed for him this year, he was the ugliest out the lot of them though! i remember that much ;D
Guest pigeon82 Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 i have had 4 or 5 chucks in the last 2 weeks hens are going really well cocks are bein little gits takes them an hour or so to come back from 3 miles but of the 7 cocks only 1 raced last year but going well everyone telling me its to early tho but im keen and its only short tossess so i figure out 1 month till racing starts and i wanna get them going but in my eyes you dont tell a runner to train 2 weeks before a race so why should a pigeon have 2 weeks i think a moth is gud last year my young birds trained for 4 monthes before first race and i had a good young bird season but everyones different last year was my first season this year is my first old bird season so if i train to early and it doesnt work ill try summit different next year
OLDYELLOW Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 im not a great lover of latebreds nothing but hassle , guess i lack the patience needed with them for racing but an asset in the stock loft
W.D. Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 Latebreds most people either love them or hate them it seems?! Personally I grew to love them as it fitted in with the time I had for the old birds and didn't have the space for Y/Bs.Apart from hawk trouble they had the sky to themselves in sept, and when you did start to race them you find out straight away if they are any good. JMO but hens seemed to be more mature or maybe just better birds than our cocks.
peterpau Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 Too cold for latebreds. Mine will go in May / June and race out to 280 mile.
ritchie1 Posted March 4, 2010 Author Report Posted March 4, 2010 well will get them ready for first race now will be tossed every week now until race day once a week just now until there a bit fitter
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 you have got to remember with late breds that they are still young birds and very unreliable till you get to the two year old stage , i had one once well trained him sent him on a race and he won it by a mile and then the next week sent him back and never saw him again lol but if you have the space to carry late breds for a couple of years go for it
