Guest j v ward Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 is this why yb loses are so big people using amoxycillin .baytrel.emtryl.metronidazole.longstem are they creating aload of drug addicts
carlsberg Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 antibiotics should only be used if your birds are sick . but i think that losses are so great because people breed so many birds more quantity than quality a few years ago you'd breed maybe 20 or so but now you breed 50 or 60 i once bred 120 young birds first 25 mile toss lost 50 got round to racing i had 40 left ended the season with 28 now i only breed 30/40 birds with 50% losses i dont blind treat if something is wrong with them then i will treat them but i wouldn't put losses down to just blind treating there are other factors to be considered
Guest shadow Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 constant feeding of antibiotics will destroy the birds immune system leaving them wide open to any virus going about in the transporter crates
REDCHEQHEN Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 We haven't had these huge young bird losses in our area last season was probably one of the hardest young bird seasons we've ever encountered since starting up - there were many young bird races with northerly winds, which we have not experienced in the past few years- and our clubs losses have not been that great I personally lost 6 youngsters from 30 (and live in the North East)

Merlin Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 These drugs and their misuse of are definitely causing problems re losses, there are other factor also,my own opinion being that main culprit is too many inferior birds are bred yearly,in most cases from in lots of instances pedigrees rather than performance birds, estimated that there is 40% less fanciers now than25 years ago, with rings issued having doubled in that time, less fanciers breeding more birds, there is no single factor responsible for abnormal losses, but many, bad libs, clashing, inadequate schooling training, over training, hawks, bad management, the list goes on, they are only youngsters for one season, lose one,you have dropped a potential 1 year old/2 year old etc, the most successful fanciers are those who can mind their youngsters, they are the future of the loft, without a good selection at seasons end, eventually you will be in trouble, or buying yet again.
chichichi Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 I would put losses down to falcons and not drugs. We have trained birds that are ranging for 1 hour 3 miles up the road,, and from the 55 let go only 20 made it home on the night,, the next dat they came in dribs and drabs and finally we lost 15 young birds from a 3 mile toss.. the falcons down here attack in pairs and they scatter the young birds , some go into trees, some keep flying until flown out and some get caught. we have even seen two parent birds catching and releasing birds for their young to practice on.. so 4 falcons attacking a batch of young birds.. we have had birds reported in england from flying around the loft with no strong wind or other birds flying over .. once a falcon has hit a batch or is chasing a batch they will try everything to get away.. antibiotics used at the right time and used correctly will inhance a young birds racing potential.. ant
just ask me Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 chichici have to say i agree with u on this one i will agree that meds are over used in our sport but the biggest prob hitting our sport is the bird of prey i lost 6 cocks two weeks before the race seaseon last year just flying around the loft and that proglem was fixed i dont hear many good suggestions to how we can fix this the rspb is a money makeing machine that uses the media for its propaganda and lies we make a load of money this weekend in blackpool and give it to charity well i say whe our sport is in so much trouble charity begins at home cant we use this money to advertise what happening to our birds ppl might say that wrong but at the rate fanicers are leaveing our sport will therebe money for charity in 10 to 15 years i dont kknow the ans but something has to be done cya
