Guest IB Posted August 3, 2008 Report Posted August 3, 2008 I have been using Vanodine for around 3 years now. It is one of the DEFRA-approved disinfectants for use with birds. I use it as a general disinfectant around the loft, spraying feeders, the baskets, the bath, the nest bowls, nest felts, and the drain and concrete area outside the loft etc. I also use it to spray the club baskets ... and my hands and clothes before leaving the clubhouse, to make sure I take nothing back to my loft and birds... I have used it once only in the drinkers, when Pigeon Health told me I had a bacterial respiratory infection in the loft (turned out to be tosh). It is the only disnifectant in animal health that specifically says it can be used in drinking water. Virkon is much misunderstood - it can be used to disinfect a water pipe system by adding it to a header tank. As you know, drinking water systems don't have header tanks in them, the water comes direct from the rising main to the tap. It is very economical, Pigeon Pharmacy sold me my original bottle 3 years ago for under £7 and I am only now reaching the bottom of it. It is diluted at 1 part Vanodine to 1500 parts water. If you measured out 1.5 litres of water for your drinker, you would put 1ml of disinfectant in it, 2ml for 3 litres, etc. It is an iodine disinfectant, and it has a colour 'activity' code. As long as it has an 'iodine' colour (between yellow and purple), the disinfectant solution is still active. Plain white and its an 'empty down the drain' case.
Blue Tooner Posted August 3, 2008 Report Posted August 3, 2008 Vanodine v18 can be put in the drinkers, I put it in one of those 7ltr drinkers at a rate of 1/3 of a capful to 7ltr. This is fantastic stuff. the 2 seasons previous to this I have had youngbird sickness and after 3 days of giving them v18 the birds improved dramatically and went on to win out of turn both seasons. I have a bottle in the loft at all times. I believe that it is widely used in the horse racing world. Top, top stuff. Cheers Blue Tooner
