DJ Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 has anyone ever used virkon s in their birds bathwater,i was advised by a fancier to dip my birds into it and dip their heads under quickly but it says on the packet that it can damage their eyes, it also says it is a skin irritant but this morning i dipped my hands into a solution of it that i made up and my hands are fine, i thought i would ask some of you more experienced fanciers before (and if) i do it? debbie :-/
Guest Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 There is a warning that it might cause eye irritation and even skin issues and just becasue it hasn't affected your skin doesn't mean it won't hurt the birds. No disrespect to Rose here as she's probably right based on her experience but she's not a vet? Ask one if in doubt.

Guest IB Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 I know in the past I have had the odd 'tingle' on the back of my hands when splashed by Virkon spray, diluted as per label. I don't think there's any benefit putting it in bath water.

Novice Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 I have a gamekeeper friend who reputedly caused permanent damage to his health spraying pheasant enclosures with Virkon----Treat it with respect.
Guest Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 I used to put virkon in my birds drinking water when they came back from race never did them any harm and I would use it again never seemed to get any problems with them when i started using it Think its one 5ml spoon to gallon of water Tip from a top fancier, may well try!

Guest Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 you cant breath dust when its diluted in water :P You can but it just changes its name from dust to microscoptic globules. For your info as well, either neat or diluted it can still be an irritant depending on your tolerance levels but lets not get into debate over it as some will say treat with caution other say they have no problems, me I just say follow guidlines by manufacturer, it saves me getting stick for being a know it all. ;D ;D ;D
