kipper Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 my young bird returned from training with broken leg , friend wrapped it in plaster , left in box for 2 weeks , no slings , plaster off he is ok.
allenyeates Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 Always wrapped cotton wool around leg then used lolly stick, cocktail sticks or similar depending on size off bid, tapped on for 4 weeks, obviously if leg is ring leg then you need to keep an eye on swelling as ring may have to be removed. Ment to say used iced water before splinnting.
Guest mick bowler Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 If you want to harness her just use an old sock cut toes out to stick head thru. For leg use 2 lolly sticks or nail files with tissue wrapped around first then surgical taped.

Guest Owen Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 Suspend the bird in a lady's tights to a hook screwed into the loft roof. Splint the leg with lollie sticks but be careful to wrap the leg in gauze or bandage to prevent damage from the sticks. This works better than putting them into a nestbox because they don't get dirty and they don't do futher damage by trying to stand on it. Besides the bird could end up with the leg healing in the wrong place if you are not very careful. Which would ruin it because most birds that have a misplaced leg can not hold it up to fly properly. Obviously they do not win many races in that condition. Boddy and Ridewood used to sell ready made splits that you could use providing you used some padding to make up the slack. Some years ago I used to make up my own plaster of paris. You could used to buy it from your local Pharmacy. It is a bit messy and you would need another pair of hands to apply it, but it is a very good way of making sure the leg heals in the correct position.
greenlands Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 Cut a drinking straw to length then split it slide it onto the broken leg,i've always used this method ,never bothered with a sling. The ladies tights idea is a good one.Lindsay
