Thanks for posting this Karl, this is a really worthwhile thread. Anyone more microscopy pics we could look at and identify the various life forms we should be aware of in our pigeons?

There are some other threads on here with samples on - I think chatrace may have posted some with worm eggs and cocci on - samples he had done for friends - and Wiley posted some similar to the above - with plant cells and starch granules - but psoting on here is very worthwhile - I think you need to practice a lot with the microscope to get the most out of it - and asking others opinions - though Wileys pics did have a lot of differnt answers, which I think is why chatrace posted the pics to show the difference

And chickadee - its interesting to a point - but can get tedious

I have difficulty seeing the canker 'thingies'  :B

and I can't use a microscope without my specs on - cos all I see is a reflection of my long eyelashes  :o

lol wish i was in the know. I thought if a thread was made would be a good learning experience for all of us that had one and we could all learn from each others findings, but hey was a gd idea  :)

Don't even recall seeing this thread, peoples.  :)

We've all got to start somewhere, and info and links in this thread are pretty good.

I'll PM Richard and ask him to consider a new 'specialist' Board.

Meanwhile, best I can offer is to make the thread sticky, at least it won't drop off Health Page 1.

Note that Karl Adams & Wiley's threads have been merged, I'll try and find the others.

I've just spent bloody ages typing out a reply to Karls second lot of photos - and its disappeared

quickly - cos I'm going to work - do flotation samples - and thinner ones than the above - background is out of focus - which means your sample is not thin enough - use a cover slip - bruno - post link to finch site please - that will shoe karl how to do a flotation sample  :K) good man  :K)

Something like 5 threads merged here - sorry if it caused members problems while I was doing it as the title would change quite a bit.

Think everything is there, but in a different order, so advise folks to work their way thro from the beginning - might even be stuff there that you haven't seen before.

Very clever again Bruno, must be something you are interested in, I rest my case

Different rules for different members

Cannae get much more personal than what you did this time, just delete what I said

Wow! I have been away from the forum for some time. And this is GOOD! I remember asking about microscopes a long time ago with not much response. My advice is 'don't give up' and soon things become recognizable at a glance. Also the magnification you are using and referencing the size of what you consider a cocci egg or worm egg to other things in the slide or each other really helps to make a positive diagnosis. I use Dr Chalmers book.

These microscopes that connect to the computer sound very interesting. Can you just look at your screen and move the slide around and focus it etc without having to look down the eyepiece? I kind of go cross-eyed after squinting down that eyepiece after awhile LOL.

Karl,

Do you have a brand name or type to look for, I think I would be better off looking for one in the USA.

And can you focus and scan slides while looking on screen rather than looking down the microscope eyepiece?

Thanks Carol

Typing with one hand holding box with microscope in it, MsPigeon, bought from US thro ebay, reading address so excuse any typos:

name is Precision World, or American scope inc, or Amscope, 15167 sierra bonita lane, chino, ca 91710, tel 909-393-9488

They have a website, can't recall it tho.
