Peckedhen Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 I have a fantail hen which stopped eating three weeks ago. I isolated her, gave her Appertex and she picked up and has been fine for over two weeks but has, over the last couple of days, gone downhill again - not eating, hunched up, wattle off white. I've treated again with the Appertex but, is there anything else I should do? Is it usual for them to get Cocci twice?
Tony C Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 Your hen could have an underlaying problem which in turn allows the cocci count to multiply. The signs you are seeing are that of cocci but this may not be the major problem, cocci could be a secondry infection.
pigeonpete Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 hi pecked, you sure its cocci? try old hands white sesqui!! best thing for going light are the other birds o.k? if she doesnt pick up after a few days then you know the best thing!! im afraid ,she is weak and will only affect the rest :-/ :-/
Peckedhen Posted August 28, 2006 Author Report Posted August 28, 2006 Well, no, I'm not sure that it's cocci but, the Appertex worked so I thought that's what it was. :-/
peterpau Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 TonyC is probbably right cocci is a secondary infection. Worms would be my next step.
Peckedhen Posted August 28, 2006 Author Report Posted August 28, 2006 Thanks for your help. I'll try worming her. :K)
ghost007 Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 What would be the recommendation for worms?
Guest speckled Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 :-/ dont get me wrong im sure ya doing ya up most for the birds,Peckedhen, but if ya just treated for cocci. please leave a while before worming, try a little probic in the water, fro a few day, light feed. :-/ the poor pigeons week enougth da ya realy think another knock to the stomach will take it lol, :o loads off "TLC" hope she picks up soon Speck,
Peckedhen Posted September 1, 2006 Author Report Posted September 1, 2006 Thanks Speck. She appeared to pick up after the second dose of Appertex then, although eating, was hunched up again. She couldn't fly and I had her put down yesterday. :'( My fancier friend told me a few days to let him do it but, I hung on hoping......now I feel guilty that I prolonged her suffering.....it turned out she was egg bound.
stevebelbin Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 You will need to treat them all for cocci, as she will have shed it in her droppings and the others will pick it up when pecking about on the floor. Also you will need to clean the full loft out and spray with a good disinfectant. I know its sounds like a lot of work, but it will stop passing it on, hopefully!!!
Peckedhen Posted September 1, 2006 Author Report Posted September 1, 2006 OK Steve, thanks. Thankfully she wasn't in the loft but out in a dovecote with just three other birds so it won't be such an onerous task as it might have been.
jimmy white Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 OOOH SORRY TO HEAR THAT SUE, BUT AT LEAST YOU DID YOUR BEST, SO AT LEAST YOU CANT BLAME YOURSELF
Peckedhen Posted September 2, 2006 Author Report Posted September 2, 2006 Hmmm, no Jimmy I should have listened when I was first told she wouldn't make it but, I prolonged her agony hoping she'd pull through! :B Moral for me: Don't get too attached to one bird! :'(
jimmy white Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 SUE, WE ALL LIVE AND LEARN WITH PIGEONS ALL THE TIME,,NO MATTER HOW LONG YOUVE HAD THEM, SO PLEASE DONT BLAME YOURSELF, THE REASON IM SAYING THIS IT HAPPENED TO ME A FEW YEARS BACK, THE BIRD ACTUALLY DIED , I TOOK IT TO THE VET FOR PM , AND FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS AN EGG GROWING IN THE WRONG PLACE, ONE OF THE TUBES OR SOMETHING, AND I KNOW I FELT ROTTEN AFTER THAT,I DID ALL I COULD DO FOR THAT BIRD BUT WAS ON THE COMPLETE WRONG LINES :)
peterpau Posted September 4, 2006 Report Posted September 4, 2006 Sad tale pecked. I had a hen die in my hands, and knew then I'd have to learn how to do the dirty deed. Not pleasant but then ?????????????
Guest Posted September 4, 2006 Report Posted September 4, 2006 I think its a perfectly natural act for us to try and help any animal in trouble. Think its part of being human.
