I have a fantail hen which stopped eating three weeks ago. I isolated her, gave her Appertex and she picked up and has been fine for over two weeks but has, over the last couple of days, gone downhill again - not eating, hunched up, wattle off white. I've treated again with the Appertex but, is there anything else I should do?  Is it usual for them to get Cocci twice? :(

Your hen could have an underlaying problem which in turn allows the cocci count to multiply. The signs you are seeing are that of cocci but this may not be the major problem, cocci could be a secondry infection.

Thanks Speck.

She appeared to pick up after the second dose of Appertex then, although eating, was hunched up again. She couldn't fly and I had her put down yesterday. :'( My fancier friend told me a few days to let him do it but, I hung on hoping......now I feel guilty that I prolonged her suffering.....it turned out she was egg bound.  :(

You will need to treat them all for cocci, as she will have shed it in her droppings and the others will pick it up when pecking about on the floor. Also you will need to clean the full loft out and spray with a good disinfectant. I know its sounds like a lot of work, but it will stop passing it on, hopefully!!!

OK Steve, thanks. Thankfully she wasn't in the loft but out in a dovecote with just three other birds so it won't be such an onerous task as  it might have been.

Hmmm, no Jimmy I should have listened when I was first told she wouldn't make it but, I prolonged her agony hoping she'd pull through! :B

Moral for me:  Don't get too attached to one bird! :'(

SUE, WE ALL LIVE AND LEARN WITH PIGEONS ALL THE TIME,,NO MATTER HOW LONG YOUVE HAD THEM, SO PLEASE DONT BLAME YOURSELF, THE REASON IM SAYING THIS IT HAPPENED TO ME A FEW YEARS BACK, THE BIRD ACTUALLY DIED , I TOOK IT  TO THE VET FOR PM , AND FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS AN EGG GROWING IN THE WRONG PLACE, ONE OF THE TUBES OR SOMETHING, AND I KNOW I FELT ROTTEN AFTER THAT,I DID ALL I COULD DO FOR THAT BIRD BUT WAS ON THE COMPLETE WRONG LINES   :) :) :)

I think its a perfectly natural act for us to try and help any animal in trouble. Think its part of being human.
