jupiter_19630 Posted November 23, 2006 Report Posted November 23, 2006 This evening I found one of my young birds on the floor instead of her perch which is most unusual. On picking her up I noticed that she was light. I then noticed a build up of beans and peas in the top of her oesaphagus. Me and the missus managed to manipulate most of the food out through the beak. The bird was attacked by a cat a while ago and while her wounds are healing nicely, I think that perhaps the scabs on her neck have been causing her difficulty in swallowing peas and beans, and I am unable to feel if there is a blockage in the scabbed area. Has any one got any ideas to ease the blockage?
Guest shadow Posted November 23, 2006 Report Posted November 23, 2006 Take it to a vet or send it on its way it will probably never be any good for racing after the trauma of the cats attack
REDCHEQHEN Posted November 23, 2006 Report Posted November 23, 2006 Not everybody coming on this forum races pigeons Shadow, have you tried feeding smaller seed ? Conditioning seed for a few days might be easier for the bird to get down.
jupiter_19630 Posted November 24, 2006 Author Report Posted November 24, 2006 Have picked the peas and beans out and added some cod liver oil to the smaller seeds. She seems to be alright on those so I,ll keep her on that till the scabs clear up, when hopefuly she,ll be able to manage her normal diet.
ACE LOFTS Posted November 24, 2006 Report Posted November 24, 2006 not being funny but shadow is 100% right in my eyes that is, if your keeping the bird for racing i would get rid of it, but if your keeping the bird just because u like em round u and not botherd about racing then look after it, like red cheq says give it small seed it might help.
Guest Posted November 24, 2006 Report Posted November 24, 2006 Do you have a syringe, if so put some very soft auqarium tubing on the end and fill the syringe with seeds or pellets liquidised with some cooled boiled water, you will be able to get some goodness into her this way until the scabs have naturally healed
Guest speckled Posted November 24, 2006 Report Posted November 24, 2006 agree with ya linda that what i would do, easy to digest, bit like feeding babys weetabixs ;D ;D
rossi Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 I disagree dont surpress is it yet....i have had some winners that have been well injured as babies.its amasing how they heal even when they have been split almost in half.. if it was a quality bird to start with give him a chance they usually repay your love and kindness...take it from someone who knows and has won the longest channel race with a bird that most of you wouldnt have batted an eyelid on putting it in the bin
jupiter_19630 Posted December 29, 2006 Author Report Posted December 29, 2006 I did persevere with this poor bird and she was coming on nicely thanks to some of the suggestions from this forum. Sadly she was taken from the loft landing board by a cat. Thanks for all your suggestions guys.
