IrishFancier Posted June 8, 2007 Report Posted June 8, 2007 I think one of my birds has sour crop, it is off form and smells bad down the throat. What is the best cure and can it be anything else. Help!!!
mosslands1 Posted June 8, 2007 Report Posted June 8, 2007 IT SOUNDS LIKE SOUR CROP THE BEST THING TO DO IS GO TO TESCO AND BUY A BOX OF WASHING SODA CRYSTALS PUT A PIECE AS BIG AS A TIC BEAN DOWN ITS THROUT AND HOLD ITS BEAK UP SO THE BIRD WILL SWALLOW IT . IT ALSO FIXES WET DROPINGS TOO
T_T Posted June 8, 2007 Report Posted June 8, 2007 Sounds like the correct diagnosis, Old Hand products do a charcoal tablet that really works. I had a Van Reet cock that was on deaths door, rocking on his feet. A week of isolation on a course of these and it cured him and he's repaid me over and over again. If you gently squeeze the pigeons crop, you should get a foul smelling bile type water come from it. After doing this, get it on the charcoal tablets.
pigeonscout Posted June 8, 2007 Report Posted June 8, 2007 charcoal tablet or use charcoal in any form burn some bread in toster and scrap of or use charcoal barbeque kind. The old Irish way of curing was to mix some charcoal dust or soot with a bit of butter make into a small pea size and pop it into the bird.
me Posted June 8, 2007 Report Posted June 8, 2007 What a load of rubbish! "Crystals" Charcol" Get yourself some antibiotics aureomycin would do or even erythromicin it gets "absorbed" and on this occasion thats probably not a bad thing. Its worked for "me" anyway.
schouwman71 Posted June 9, 2007 Report Posted June 9, 2007 usually just squeezing the birds crop will sort the problem out, hold him downwards and squeeze the crop till all the water runs out, thats all i do when i ever get it,never had to pop owt down its throat.

"Crystals" Charcol" Get yourself some antibiotics aureomycin would do or even erythromicin it gets "absorbed" and on this occasion thats probably not a bad thing. Its worked for "me" anyway. The worst thing you can give a bird with sour crop is antibiotics. You want to read up on sour crop before you start telling people what they are saying is rubbish. Sour Crop is also called Candida, or Thrush. It is a very common disease, caused by a fungal infection of the digestive tract. It’s often associated with excessive use of antibiotics. Symptoms of Sour Crop include listlessness, loss of appetite, weight loss, a water-filled crop, and frequent vomiting. The vomit often has a very putrid odor. Sometimes in lesser cases, thrush will show itself as just small whitish spots in the throat, which can cause confusion with Canker. Another symptom, not often noticed, is feather pulling in adult birds. To prevent Sour Crop, avoid overcrowding, maintain a sanitary loft, and do not medicate indiscriminately, especially with antibiotics. http://www.siegelpigeons.com/asked-sourcrop.html
jimmy white Posted June 10, 2007 Report Posted June 10, 2007 squeeze whats in the crop out ,,or work it out with massaging its crop , dilute some milton , syrynge it down, filling the crop then after 10 mins squeeze out again , then put some milton in the drinker for a few days [in other words bathe the birds crop out with diluted milton]

me Posted June 10, 2007 Report Posted June 10, 2007 Can givin to much cider vinegar cause sour crop and wat else can over using it cause. it is certainly touted too much on this site as a cure all for my likeing!

Until a couple of years ago I would have washed out my drinkers with Milton now I just pop them into the microwave after washing for 30 sec's that kills all.
Guest Posted June 10, 2007 Report Posted June 10, 2007 Can givin to much cider vinegar cause sour crop and wat else can over using it cause. Vinegar is a foodstuff so feeding it in moderation isn't in itself harmful. Cider vinegar being an acid has the ability to prevent bacteria and mould growth. It contains vitamins & minerals which are also vital foodstuffs. So feeding it in moderation is beneficial when there is something working on the bird . Sour crop means there is a bowel 'blockage' which eventually causes a build-up of bacteria, mould and other things in the bird's crop. CAV will at least prevent any further bacteria and mould growth by turning the crop content slightly acidic, and this will at the very least hold the problem in check. Vinegar doesn't cause sour crop, it helps to prevent it becoming worse - and as its an everyday household thing, there's no delay in treatment, either waiting to go to a vet, or on someone to post 'some' to you.
Guest slugmonkey Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 At the FIRST onset of any symptoms I go to CV I am not saying it will cure everything but it will sure slow most things down until a proper diagnosis can be made I belive you would have to give them a LOT to do any harm there have been many posts on here about CV I myself have started giving about 1 - 1 1/2 weeks of cv continous before race season instead of the usual course of preseason antibiotics then I follow this with a course of probiotics and havent had ANY drop in health in fact I think they are better for it I am racing a 600 in 2 weeks and will probably give 1 week as soon as they get back from this weeks race

peterpau Posted June 16, 2007 Report Posted June 16, 2007 I give 1 table spoon per drinker 5 days aweek. On saturday and sunday I give 2.5 mill of milton per drinker. Milton is good eneough to clean a baby bottle without rinsing so tiz ok for the birds. I take cider vinegar and honey every morning. Tiz good eneough for me. Slugmonkey and Bruno seem to be dead on. Ours too will go 600 mile next week.
