Guest bristolkev Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 i `ve noticed that one of my hens eye`s reflecting the light.so on a closer inspection i noticed that her pupil in her eye has disappeared.it`s not a catarac because you can see through the pupil into behind the eye.any idea`s on what can cause this?
Guest IB Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 At a guess, that's what is called keritinitis (spelling) members have reported it on here over the years, we haven't bottomed the true cause (bacterial or viral infection) which turns the whole eye an opaque milky colour, and the bird ends up blind.
Guest j.bamling Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 is the bird healthy ? whats its weight & condition like ?

REDCHEQHEN Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 in perfect good health, had dropping`s tested by sandhill pigeon vet bird given a clean bill of health by vet along with rest of my birds. when was that ? If you take this bird to the vet now - unfortunately he'll tell you otherwise
sammy Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 seen the exact same thing in pouters a number of years back the man took them to the vet and salmonella /paratyphoid was the diagnosis ,the pupil had completely dissapeared
Guest IB Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Here's a picture from Merck Vet Manual. Mareks Disease in a chicken. Looks very similar eye turning cloudy / milky colour. Job for a vet I'd say. http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/servlet/CVMHighLight?file=htm/bc/poumr02.htm&word=eye,cloudy
Guest bristolkev Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 the thing is the pupil has`nt gone cloudy or mikly it`s completley gone.

Guest IB Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 the thing is the pupil has`nt gone cloudy or mikly it`s completley gone. I have a pigeon that lost the whole of what you would call the outer part of its eye in an accident in my garden. The pupil is just a hole in the iris. Sitting behind that is the lens, and sitting behind that again is a huge muscular structure that holds the lens in place. If all that had gone, the birds eye would be shut tight and its head would be swollen to three times normal size for at least a few weeks. It also wouldn't have an eye in the eye socket, because all the pressurised fluid that gives it its shape would have gone out through the hole you think you are seeing. There is some virus or bacteria at work on the cornea (the outer part of the eye) its destroying it, its eating its way inwards. Its a vet job.
Guest cloudview Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 what age is the bird , this sometimes happens when bird has had a slight stroke ,is it abit unsteady ,confused , but i would,nt rule out para thyoid
Guest bristolkev Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 do you reckon the vet could tell me by these pics if i sent them to him as he`s up the other end of the country from me.i don`t know of any pigeon vets locally to me.the bird looks well and perfectly health.as i said i only noticed this because the light was reflecting off it.
Guest bristolkev Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 no she`s fine!....she`s a 2yr old
Guest Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Sometimes things can look worse than they are and its easy to jump to conclusions and panic,I reluctantly took in a ferral squeeker 5 years ago which had been handed in at the vets after some kids had been kicking it.I put him straight into the isolation shed where all new birds go,treated him for all the usuals, still not happy with him after 8 weeks, his eyes were and still to this day arent right!!,spent money on tests for ornithosis and salmonella, both negative,he gets conjunctivitus every winter without fail, people kept saying isolate him,its one eyed cold, its this that and the other, after 4 years found out he just has in growing eye lids so he cant wash the dirt out of his eyes, all that money and he doesnt have any disease atall, hes lived here longer than most of my show birds and they are all fine. Why do we always jump to conclusions with our birds and assume its something they are all going to catch?,why can't we just accept that some birds get things wrong with them that are unique to them?,we all do it

I had a similar thing years ago too, only one. "Strange" No pupil etc & you could see into the middle of the head so to speak (complete mystery to me) & my mates & no one could help me, some type of infection. The cock is alright today etc & it recovered after a while, thou the eye is slightly weaker in colour & strength than it's other one now (but I dont look at eyes much) & it still breeds me nice race birds etc, so I'm happy. PS Just another little mystery ?????? ;D ;D ;D, that we happen to come across in life at times, in this sport. Enjoy.
