pigeonscout Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 If the eggs are not filled crack them open if the yolk is intact then the cock is at fault if the yolk is mixed with the white of the egg it is the hen who is at fault. Try a eye drop of Vit E on his food every other day for two weeks before pairing.
sammy Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 will try anything and everything next season start him on a course of wheatgerm oil now capsules if you can one every socond day and watch his droppings if they go to soft then make every three /four days and before you mate him up trim feathers around vebt area
Guest Dublin lofts Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 Thanks alot for all the help lads
Larry Lucas Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 Hmmm, lights on, feed good, in apparent good health. Apart from his age there are a number of other possibilities. As in hens dormant paratyphoid can cause sterility in cocks. Take samples of droppings from him over five days and have them cultured. If salmonella raises its head there is the remote possibility that treatment could restore fertility. However, I had a nine year old cock once that would only fertile eggs in late spring and early summer. He was on lights with the other stock birds but did not respond until later. Keep him with his hen and you may be rewarded later even if you do nothing proactive. Good luck. I just thought of another thing -- injectable gonadatropins. You can get it from your veterinarian.
jimmy white Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 a cock at 10 years old really should be filling his eggs, maybe worth a visit to a good avian vet, you have the lighting , that should have helped ,, but after trying most things allready mentioned [try selenium and zinc] , i would tend to think there was something amiss with the bird, vet would be your best bet now
Guest Thunder Birds Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 If the eggs are not filled crack them open if the yolk is intact then the cock is at fault if the yolk is mixed with the white of the egg it is the hen who is at fault. Try a eye drop of Vit E on his food every other day for two weeks before pairing. Agree re: vit E a couple of times a week but cont right up until eggs are laid and in combination with garlic. 'Belgarlic + Vit E' from Belgica Deweerd is a good product - worked for us in September this year on a 97 cock who hadn't filled eggs all year. Obviously regular access to all the usual grit, minerals etc.
OLDYELLOW Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 im sure seaweed is good at boosting fertility as well
Guest IB Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 I'm puzzled why 9-yo would stop filling eggs so suddenly. There surely must have been some other change between 2006 and now? You are looking for fault in the bird but maybe there's no physical fault there but with environment he's in: for example is he in amongst a couple of 'wasters' - younger cocks that take delight in watching other pairs' courtship & when the cock mounts they jump the pair and stop them treading? In addition to what others advise, I'd also have this cock in his own end. No chance of interruption then.
Guest Dublin lofts Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 this cock is back in the stock loft were he was born his father,1 brothers are there aswell ,there is 16 boxs in it only keep 12 cocks ,no wasters in it they only get 3 years then its the ben
just ask me Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 id lock him up in a box with hen there's a few reasons for this one u can guarantee parents 2 no fighting knocking cocks off hens
Guest Dublin lofts Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 we locked him up with hen, put him in y/bird loft with just his hen no good. we will put him and hen togeter early summer. Thanks alot agan for all ideas great help lads .
Guest slugmonkey Posted November 20, 2008 Report Posted November 20, 2008 next set he lays swap them for good eggs let him rear the babys might also try putting him on bayatril for 7-9 days we had a 7 year old cock that quit filling the vet said 8 days bayatril he is still filling 11 years old now another thing is to put him in a cage with a perch that spins I have heard some cocks have " hip " problems that prevent them from treading properly ? 1 day in 1 day out maybe just a thought
T_T Posted November 20, 2008 Report Posted November 20, 2008 I contacted Bert Braspenning about a month ago with the same problem saying that I had aquired for my brother, a pair of ten year old stock birds and that he wanted to sustain their fertilty rate and Berts reply was, a quarter of an Aspirin tablet 4/7 days before pairing. I also think, a place on their own would help.
