symbro Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 so i walked into my loft and saw a bird who was droopy and doesnt want to fly. picked her up and feels like she has an egg that she wants to lay. Anything i can do to help her? i seem to remember something about a warm water soak... but i couldnt find any threads on this.
Merlin Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 Read somewhere to hold it over steaming kettle ( not hot ) and rub some oil around the vent area. p.s How old is this hen ?
Tony C Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 This happened to a hen of mine some years back and I was told to pop a couple of cod liver oil tablets down her throat then every half hour or so hold her rear end down in hot water, whilst doing this massage her cloaca region with an anti bacterial soap. I done this 3-4 times placing her in a basket in a warm room between working on her. She passed the eggs (the second was there also but that was bound abnormally) and although weak came through it ok. One thing you mustn’t do is put her back in the loft to quick as her mate will want to drive her again, she'll need a couple of weeks of rest. I hope this works for you.
Guest tomo68 Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 Just checked my 2 young birds this morning and found this on one of the young, its by the bum and is solid and yellow in colour the bird is still feeding ok and drinking and seems full of life the only thing it does do is it keeps lifting its tail up i just dont know what this could be (sorry about the picture quality)
Guest Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 give it a squeeze it should come out.
Guest tomo68 Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 what do you think it could be.
OLDYELLOW Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 unformed egg could take its womb out with it
OLDYELLOW Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 give it a syringe of cod liver oil or vegetable oil get a hot water bottle wrap a towel rond it then wrap a damp tea towel around the bird so it cant move then place on top of hot waterbotle the heat and oil should help things along and hopefully the womb wont come out
Guest tomo68 Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 hi squeezed it all thats coming out except for 1 little bit of pooh is blood and puss its still hard and the lump hasnt really gone down.
THE FIFER Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 fill a bowl with boiling water and hold the birds bottom over the steam , this is what we used to do with the chickens when they were egg bound,
Tom Avis Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 Steady on, with all this squeezing, steaming oiling etc, it's not a great picture but could this be anal canker? Regards Tom

Tony C Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 Submerge her rear end in hot water and massage around the vent for about 10 minutes then pop a cod liver oil capsule down her throat. Place her in a basket and leave in a warm place. Repeat this every 2 hours or so, hopefully this will do the trick.

Blue Chequer Pied Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 Submerge the hen is haot water (make sure it is not too hot) Massage warm olive oil into the vent trying to get some inside taking time to ensre the mascle gets time to relax and then keep in a warm dry place. Good call from Tony re the codliver oil capsule and if you have some calcium liquid this will be a huge help also. Repeat the hot water and olive oil after a couple of hours and keep in a warm place. Dont try to force the egg it could lead to great sometimes fatal problems. A common cause of egg-binding is calcium deficency. Cod liver oil on the food for a couple of weeks along with plenty grit or a calcium supplement will usually help avoid this problem. Paul.
Delboy Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 Syringe a little, warmed, codliver oil up its jacksy.
