mobster Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 is there any effect on pigeons where its loft is located in a place dark, not actually dark but sunlight cant penetrate to the loft.
Chatrace Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 I See your a carpenter by looking at your Avatar, and could build one square in the middle of and open field, the Sun is your friend, If you can have it hit the loft it is a plus.
snowy Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 my loft is situated in a sun trap, always seems to catch the sun, didnt plan it, it was just convienience where i put it

Guest Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 I like to get a lot of sunlight into my loft, My YB loft gets the sun in the morning and My widowhood loft gets it in the afternoon, and you can see a difference in the birds when they are sat in the sun, they love to be out in it. Can you not put roof lights in to allow a bit of light in, which you can adjust when it gets too hot around midday.
Guest slugmonkey Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 I allow my birds to get out in sun but in lofts darker is better I like my lofts out in sun with no shade so sun pounds down on roof I have seen my birds with there backs against metal roof when it was so hot you couldnt touch it they will also snuggle against east wall in morning in early spring it is metal also and gets warm in morning I have also noticed that better birds seem to get perches in farthest darkest corners I try to block out light in loft without blocking ventilation
jimmy white Posted January 29, 2006 Report Posted January 29, 2006 I See your a carpenter by looking at your Avatar, and could build one square in the middle of and open field," the Sun is your friend, If you can have it hit the loft it is a plus". QUITE AGREE WITH YOU CHATRACE [ NOT THAT WE GET MUCH OF IT ;D ;D ;D] ALSO ROSE HAS A POINT FOR CONDITIONING BIRDS FOR LATER IN THE SEASON, YOU CAN USE THE SUN TO YOUR ADVANTAGE, 10 WEEKS B4 THE BIG ONE, AS MUCH SUN AS POSS. :) :) AND ME TALKING ABOUT SUN IN SCOTLAND, WOW ;D ;D ;D
andy Posted January 29, 2006 Report Posted January 29, 2006 MOBSTER, AVATAR LOOKS A BIT MORE SECRET SOCIETY TO ME!
mobster Posted January 30, 2006 Author Report Posted January 30, 2006 MOBSTER, AVATAR LOOKS A BIT MORE SECRET SOCIETY TO ME! andy, i dont think so... its not a secret society, but rather society with secrets...
T_T Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 I agree with Slugmonkey. My brother was in a position where his loft was in the sunlight from morning to dusk but the sun couldn't get in, only ventilation. He won out of turn. He is now in a different loft position and for whatever reason, has made some alterations to bring light into the loft. Although you can see the birds, the results don't seem to have been the same. When he had a dark loft he used to keep it open long enough to excercise the birds and feed them, after that, total darkness. Rest.!!
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 I am building new loft and am using burlap curtains to darken it I am using old garage to start loft with and am going to frame wire over large door and cover that with burlap
MsPigeon Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 Geez Slugmonkey, you must have pigeons coming out your ears. I thought you already had several lofts and 100's of birds. : ;D Now there in your garage too! ;D ;D
THE FIFER Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 SUNSHINE IS GOOD FOR THE BIRDS AND THEY LOVE IT.
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 I bought a new BIGGER place and we bought a place in Fla so I am rebuilding lofts and starting over I didnt say birds dont like sun I just think they like dark loft better in my lofts if I have birds perching on sunny perches I know I am getting overcrowded
westy Posted February 22, 2006 Report Posted February 22, 2006 i knowtised that my birds love the sun they will lie on the florr in the sun of even the perches.
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 22, 2006 Report Posted February 22, 2006 I am not saying they dont like the sun what I am saying is they would rather ROOST in the shadows
westy Posted February 22, 2006 Report Posted February 22, 2006 I am not saying they dont like the sun what I am saying is they would rather ROOST in the shadows yes i understand you bet over here in the uk we do not have as much sun as you have in the winter.
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 22, 2006 Report Posted February 22, 2006 No I am just saying that the birds feel safer roosting in the shadows where they cant be seen by predators
snowy Posted February 26, 2006 Report Posted February 26, 2006 any sun & our birds are always basking in it
peterpau Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 Well I kind o' think they do better if it's dark. After all plenty of good distance pigeons in Scotland, and I don't know if they ever see sunlight up in the frozen north.
Rentenier Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 The pigeons absorb Vitamin D while in the sun.
MsPigeon Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 I agree Rentenier, there is a lot of good in sunlight!
