possibly, there is a member in my club who has a similar problem at the moment.

He is treating with large ammount of vitamins and anything to promote imunity.

Do not give antibiotics, they will not work for a virus but do use an anti viral dissinfectant like Virkon-s to sparay the loft out every coupe of days!

It is excellent stuff and is ministry approved for foot and mouth etc.

My concern with this problem is that if he goes to a normal vet the first thing they'll do is prescribe Batryl because they don't know what they are doing and he will lose the rest of the birds!

Sick birds isolate,in a crate.pannier away from loft, treat all drinking water with iodine,or Hydrogen Peroxide,if/as any other bird becomes sick remove, you will have to find out what type of  sicknees before you can treat it,ask your friend,

As Merlin says, isolate any sick birds and remove any others as soon as they look show signs of illness.

Just use a multivitamin in the water and a probiotic to help build natural imunity.

Use Virkon-s to spray the loft out as this is an anti viral disinfectant.

Your treading a dangerous path by not investigating the cause. If its a salmonella problem your pigeons will suffer for years to come. There's vets that you can send dead pigeons to via the postal service (that is if your in the UK), no need to live near one.

Contact DEFRA and they will tell you where to send one of your live birds for post morterm

it is the best way, they are not as bad as people make out. They really helped us by treating for the right problem rather than guessing and treating blind

http://www.defra.gov.uk/

They then send a report to your local vet who will prescribe any treatment you need, your local vet would only do this anyway, personally would go direct to DEFRA

There is a possibility this could be Paramixo. This disease is still around and any birds which are not vaccinated are vulnerable. The virus has changed since first discovered in that the birds don't always show the twisting of the neck symptom. I know I had it last year from a stray entering the loft. Birds die within 3 days of showing symptoms.

I don't know the phone number but the best advice available is from Tom Pennicoat.

He may be contacted at the Scottish Agricultural College, Auchincruive,Ayr. I don't have a phone number at the moment but I can find one if required.

I agree with the other posts that you have got to find out what you are dealing with. Who can say it's a virus without testing?

The advice your friend has given sounds very much like 'one way' of tackling YBS, which is combination virus / bacteria/ yeast.

Don't let anything go through your loft. Pick out the sick / sickly-looking birds and isolate them. Attend to them last.

Clean and disinfect with the best you can lay your hands on, you can get Jeyes Fluid also DEFRA-approved, from a supermarket or gardening shop ..

As a holding job, I'd be getting garlic in the drinking water until SAC or DEFRA come back with a proper diagnosis. Good for virus, bacteria, yeast, mould - a catch-all - it won't queer the pitch before proper medicine is prescribed for your birds, which giving this or that antibiotic from Tom, Dick or Harry would or could. Make it strong, 2 bulbs (20/30g) crushed fresh into 2 litres of drinking water.

1. Are these your young birds?

2. How many have you got?

3. Do you have old birds and how do they look?

What IB says - above - is sound advice.

If it were me I'd immediatley dispatch the birds which are poorly - get them out - and keep everything disinfected. If you can get a diagnosis then that would be a good way ahead otherwise you can only guess.

Alll the best, hope things turn out OK for you.

Once again remove ones that are ill/look ill,if its a type of virus, not a lot you can do,it will run its course, treat water, use multu-vits,and electrolytes in water, get a blow torch, burn all surfaces,or treat well with good disenfectant.disenfect all troughs/ feeders/ drikers, disenfect or blow torch every sq inch, dont visit other lofts just yet, likewise dont have visitors to loft. How many pigeons have you got/type/loft location/isnt there a fancier about who might help you out.

stop putting this fancier wrong or he will end up with a loft full of dead pigeons trust me...get them droppings sent of mate before its to late....ive had pigeons years and tried what there telling you to do..? waste of time ..there getting worse by the minute....tick tock..tick tock.... ??) ??) ??) ??) ??) ??) ??) ??) ??) ??)

Reading, and reading between lines,he hasnt got dosh to do this, assuming its not a virus,he has been give only good practical advice under the circumstances

I appreciate the money position, few of us have a lot going round.

Lizzy Rigby's full laboratory postal test kit costs £35. You can email her on allanimalsvetclinic@hotmail.co.uk. An email costs nothing, tell her your problem and ask for her advice. If she says do a test, I'm willing to chip in towards the cost.

Garlic bulbs are around 20p at any supermarket. Saw Jeyes Fluid in Asda at under £3. A sachet of Virkon is under £2 and makes 5 gallons of disinfectant, last around a month.

The real cost of DO NOTHING is you lose all your birds, all the money and time and attention and work that you put into them, and you have nothing at the end of it all. Make that call, send that email. There's folk'll be willing to help.

It is good that you vaccinated the birds fro Paramyxo, but sadly that won't stop them from getting it...................

If you can get them test do - they aren't as expensive as you think.........

People are correct in so far as antibiotics won't clear a virus, but what a broad spectrum antibiotic will do is stop any secondary infections developing, which often occurs when the birds immunity is compromised.

Basically your problem could be anything, paramyxo, paratyphoid, aedno virus, Circo virus etc etc.

I hope you get it sorted mate, it is always a stressful time when the birds are ill.
