harky Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 had the problem earlier in the season when pigeons were feeding young and found it to be a salt imbalance . :) :)
Guest IB Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 In the off-season, I did a few 'experiments' with water consumption. I measured the water in, and I measured the water 'back' next morning to see if different additives had any affect on birds' water consumption. They do. Tight firm droppings are not all that they appear to be. I've seen manys a post 'the droppings were brilliant after X in the water'. Yes saw them and thought the same myself. Until I discovered the birds drank only half the water in 24 hours that they usually drink. So did less water tighten up the droppings, or did the additive? Less water I think. I'm also a bit puzzled at giving medication with youngsters in the nest. Harka-Verm leaflet tells you not to, and you may have damaged the youngsters feathering too by doing so.
Guest chrisss Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 i have [i think] the same problem only with one [a yb]it was out for 3 days i got it back in [stuck in a old nestbox by itself] it was ok for 24hrs now its droppings are green/brown and slimy, gave it a canker tab [for the stress] but still not sure about it any ideas
pioneerlofts Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 put a little bit of table salt on a tray will solve the problem cheers
Roland Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 You know, just last week was discussing this with a 'Name' and I related to him that a another big name advocated that when they have the squirts that he has no hesitation in feeding just Tic beans and maples peas for a few days. Then he places them all on a 'White floor' and watches them... sqirters are out. Now Pea Nuts have even more 'Protein' and the droppings in this scenario should be nut brown and firm... Go figure. At best the droppings what testing via Vet that IS poultry orientated! Wonders little how ailments are passed around in the 'Race Panniers'.
Guest scoobybob Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 I stop feeding peanuts 5-6 days ago with the exception of one pair who still get 7-8 peanuts each a day. All droppings are now firm so this rules out the peanuts. The birds are now drinking a little less than they did when they had the squirts, which makes me think they were drinking too much...The Question is why were they drinking too much?
