Guest scoobybob Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 For the last few days I have noticed the birds have got the squirts. Even the youngsters in the nest have the runs. I have just partitioned the loft and have the stock separate from this years young. Since doing this I have noticed it is only the stock birds and there nestlings with the squirts. The loft side with this years young is ok all droppings look good. It was only yesterday the birds were separated so all birds have been feed and watered together. Only this years young fly out. The stock birds never go out. All birds look very healthy and this years birds are flying an hour in morning and an hour in the evening. One thing I have started doing is hand feeding the stock birds with a few peanuts. They love the peanuts and I thought it might build them up. As its only the stock that get the peanuts and its them and there young with the squirts do you think that half a dozen peanuts each are giving them the squirts.
LISTER Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 think they will be fine in couple days you have just stressed them by changing things around

Guest scoobybob Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 Bought a bag at the pigeon shop. Lasted 2 weeks I had a mouthfull every now and then and they tasted ok.
Guest scoobybob Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 I always buy my peanuts from the health shop julian graves, and always redskin in fact i bought two bags today think they are 1.5kg for £1.49 Your getting them 1p cheaper than me...The pigeon shop does peanuts for £1:40 but peanuts for pigeons are £1:50 both bags look the same to me... ;D
billy wilson Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 3 kilos at batleys 4 quid not bad as all red skins also fit for human consumption wife paid 70 pence for 250 grams at asda high way robbery for 3 kilos would have cost double what we paid at batleys.my mate cant get first round to eat them [waited to long] second round throw handful in and they are like kanibals. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D billy
Guest IB Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 I'd link the peanuts with the problem droppings - and bin them. Not a question of cost, but of quality. Peanuts sold for animal consumption can by law be contaminated by mould - up to 5%. Those for human consumption must be 0% contaminated. If I fed peanuts, it would be Asda redskins, every time, rip-off or no.

Yes Pea nuts are good, indeed great in their place BUT shop for Human's only. And then not too many. 3/4 four when back from race, a couple each next two days is ampleful.
DOVEScot Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 Was there not a post a while back where someone suggested microwaving them to kill any harmful bacteria Most pigeon feed merchants sell them in 25 kg bags, so these are not good for them :-/
Roland Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 True DOVEScot, many been doing that for 10 years or more. Know a few that give 2/3 a couple of days before basket day ... and many 2/3 on return from race. Others have placed them before them all the time... But as I often warn, TOOO much protein causes TOXIN poisoning and believe you me, you don't want any of that!
Roland Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 As proteins, many bacterial toxins resemble enzymes in a number of ways. Like enzymes, they are denatured by heat, acid and proteolytic enzymes, they act catalytically, and they exhibit specificity of action. The substrate (in the host) may be a component of tissue cells, organs or body fluid.
Lennut Tar Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 EVERY ONE LIKES TO FEED PEANUTS 25KG £23.00 I don't think that's quite right Pigeon !!!!!!!!!! :) I know one that's never fed them ;) . Enjoy.

Guest Thunder Birds Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 I doubt it's the peanuts - are they drinking too much water? if you give em some pickstone or similar I bet they'll wolf it down. 2 days belgasol should sort it if that's the case

I have fed peanuts, for the last fifteen years or so, and during this time, have noted that some of our so called "aces," have reccomended the usage of, through their glut of selling videos. I buy them in large quantities. (not videos) lol @ 25 k, as our health shops do, before THEY weigh them into little, dolly mixture bags. Don't let them fool you! They get them them in big bags from China, Spain etc and this determines the colour of their skin, Akin to the skin of us all. (temperature) AS WITH HUMANS. LOL . Whether they micro them or not? Who Knows? I will add more soon, Cheers, Vic.

They drink 2.5lts every 24hrs. I also have 12 2008 birds in another compartment. They drink about half this amount.
Guest Thunder Birds Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 If its what I think it is there's a lot of fanciers around with the same problem. Had a pair go that way last year and found out others had the same rang Henk De Weerd to nip it in the bud and he recommended belgasol for 2 days. Tried it and no problem since. Its been a problem in Belgium for a number of years apparently.
Guest Vic Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 I have had a problem, just as like the original contributor. It's a "SNAP" situation. I dont have a stock loft, with unflown cocks. Any cock that is within my "stock loft" has earned its keep. But is always on tap, to be called into action, because very few are no more than 6 year old. I planned to send some of these cocks over the water, some have big youngsters in the nest, I may have overfed the peanuts for these, but I have a spread of water neath each and every dropping. Yes! we can overdo the peanuts, Maybe? But these birds are as silky as ever, and will be going to Welshpool for a seventy mile toss tomorrow affternoon. Sometimes, wrong or excessive feeding, can act as a purge. lol
Guest scoobybob Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 Put in an order for belgasol hope it does the trick....Its all hands to the squeegees at the moment.
Guest scoobybob Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 The stock birds look very healthy and all stand with heads high and proud. But its the youngsters I feel sorry for, they make a right mess in the nest box which has to be cleaned about 3 times a day. Luckily for the stock birds when they enter to feed the young, the young are facing them or it would be like a paint ball attack. Brown slurry with a 8-12" range.

Most of the discussion here has been about peanuts etc "strange" when one considers the problem (Wet nests) Now if it was me !!!!!!!! I would consider it may be an electrolite issue, so I would give them iodized salt 24/7 etc. Also !!!!!!! thou the breeders may look a million dollars ;) I would get them checked out for canker, because this can be one of the first signs of this problem. Enjoy.
Guest scoobybob Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Most have been about peanuts as if you look at the problem logically you find all birds mix in the same loft but only the stock and there young have the problem the others are ok with good droppings. Only the stock are hand fed the peanuts. I have put all birds on Harka-Verm for the 3 day course just in case its worms. Today is the 3rd day and I notice the birds are not drinking as much water there is next to no droppings in the stock side so cannot really tell if they are drying up or just squirting water but the nests are still wet. Will see what the morning brings.
Guest scoobybob Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 I have now done the 3 day course of belgasol. In 2 days the stock birds had good good droppings and no longer wet. The next day there young also had good droppings. Thanks for the tip Thunder Birds... it worked a treat.
