Always give mine peanuts when the longer racers come along, and on day of basketing give em as many as they want. And they are getting a few a day now for the moult.

Yes Jimmy I use peanuts for the longer races each bird going to the race gets 3 every day as a treat and I only use peanuts fit for human consumption, not the ones sold as wild bird food. Peanuts can carry a lot of toxins and mould which you can not see with the naked eye. also if they are not stored right they soon get a fungus on them. I dont feed many as you know pigeons will gorge them selves on them and the are fattening

once they get the taste of them   they will eat them with relish, but as shadow says they are very fattening,i found them very usefull for the the longer races and in the rearing of young birds, and as i say once they get the taste of them  ,theyll go daft on them , so broken down a bit are very handy in keeping birds tame, i used to also buy them for human consumtion , a little at a time. i found i was eating them myself, and my droppings were more like a nutty bar    p.s not salted peanuts

Just a note in support of what Shadow says about toxins.

Peanuts for 'animal' consumption are allowed by law to have a 5% aflotoxin (mould) contamination.

Peanuts for human consumption are required by law to have 0% contamination.

Snowy a freind and good flyer told me he stopped feeding peanuts for one youngbird season and these youngbirds never ate them in the future seasons but the ones that always got peanuts love them.

I always treat my birds to a few peanuts a few days before the race.my stock get a treat now and then also.

Does this kill any bacteria or mould Speight?

I use bird peanuts as those for human consumption are expensive. I'm having second thoughts after reading this thread.

I prefer not to use peanuts of any description, would rather use Safflower to build them up for the longer races

Peckedhen, I'm only 17 half years old, still learning about things that pigeons needs, but i've heard some fanciers does put peanuts in the mircowave, for 15 seconds, on the basketting day as many as they want to eat peanuts to stop get sickness in the baskets, for long channels,

I havent try yet and will try peanuts next year for new YBs 2006

I hope someone can answer your question,

I've read in the book about Gerard Koopman gives Peanuts and Cheese in the Blender mixture to give a pigeons, says there's a lot of Portien, wonder if pigeons likes Cheese or not.

Has anyone gave cheese/pea nuts in the blender mixed or not?
