Guest IB Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 surely most of the vitamins are destroyed via the cooking process , although i used to give my birds vegetable water , didnt do them anyharm That is my understanding too, boiling destroys vitamins. Another one I've picked up on is paddy rice, noticed one of my favourite seed mixtures, Natural, contained it, but that it was white rice. The bit with most vitamins has been lost in the milling - brown rice is white rice with that vitamin-rich coat left on. I feed 3 tablespoons of brown rice daily [44 birds]. And as I said elsewhere, I do like to give fresh greens April - September time, lettuce, kale, spinach etc.

Guest IB Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 just wondering if you have seen the big blocks of rock salt ,it is full of all types of natural vits ,it is black and grey in colour ,not your ordinary salt the pigeons go mad for it .ATB les. I know some fanciers used this back when I was a teenager. Never sure even now what it is/ was. Rock salt to me is something completely different - it's the stuff the gritters are spreading on frozen roads just now, and very corrosive, so obviously not that. Does it have a chemical name? I know what a lick is, seen it in my pigeon store, a mixture of vitamins and minerals for horses.
Tony C Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 Ex Pat, Steve Patrick swears that by using the water from freshly cooked FRESH vegetables, especially the greens, is more beneficial to our birds than any of these quack vitamins on the shelf today. I am not talking about frozen veg (that most of the women use these days) Just a thought! EX-CLAMATION, Vic! I recall reading Steve P writing about this and I'm pretty sure this was how he gave it to he's pigeons before he got he's hands on a juicer.

Roland Posted February 3, 2009 Author Report Posted February 3, 2009 fresh greens , natural honey in water ,b12 cytacon , once a week will give them all the vits and mins they cant get from their food ,also rock salt to pick at . And charcoal. You see for instance a Ad saying about Black Minerals, then stating mostly Charcoal and it's properties. Likewise many more.
OLDYELLOW Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 black minerals is mainly crushed charcoal ( wouldnt be supprised if nowt else in it ) very good if suspect birds may be poisoned same as clay pickstones
Roland Posted February 3, 2009 Author Report Posted February 3, 2009 Also, if ever you see a bird pecking and missing the pea or whatever it is aiming at. Don't uderstand why, but will quickly pick up the charcoal bits and very soon inded has no more problems.
