edthekid Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 this year is the only year i have never cleaned out every day........no probs so far........chance or luck........not good on the eye tho.....is that the reason we do it
rasbull Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 I hate my loft not looking clean. I just dont enjoy going up the loft if I havent cleaned out. The birds always appear better after the loft has been cleaned. But I have been to one persons in particualr, who only cleans out maybe twice a year, but he showed me his trophy cabinet and it was jam packed with trophies his team had won. Each to their own I guess, but for me the cleaner the better.
NW USA Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 Its obvious both systems work for people and pigeons. Any germs that may be present in a loft with deep litter will also be present in a loft that is scraped. Nobody said they scrape and spray the entire loft with clorox bleach twice a day. The birds will gain immunity just as birds in a deep litter loft will. A scraped loft will have less dust and if it does get wet somehow it can certainly be dry much quicker the a loft with 4 inches of droppings. As far as getting vitamins from fecal matter, I'd just as soon add some to their food or water.
little sam Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 i have mine on deep litter helps there immunity perches are scrapped every day tho ;-) Same for babies here
BLACK W F Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 i used to clean out everyday but trying to get the wife to do it instead of watching daytime TV LOL cheers Alan
Blue Chequer Pied Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 I think there are pro's and con's for both systems. I am a scrapper man as I hate standing in droppings. Having said that after just returning to the sport and reading about all the diseases that are on the go nowadays I have decided to put my yb's on deep litter. I do not like it but is good for building immunity ( I hope ). I do like doing my cleaning when the birds are out of the loft (except the stockbirds) but if they are not out they soon get used to you cleaning round them. Mine all go to their boxes when I start on the floor. I do however think the most important thing you can do is pick a system and stick to it i.e either deep litter or scrape every day. Paul.
bigdees Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 blue chequer pied thinking about putting y.bs on deep litter to start with i heard that you can get shavings that are treated specialy for that i am going to enquire about it let you know how i get on
Guest Hjaltland Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 I detest seeing dirty drinkers.. Hygeine where you can, it makes sense. No good wishing ailments on your birds.
