pigeonman007 Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 Hi all, A couple of weeks ago I had yb sickness symptoms in the loft, watery droppings everywhere and a couple of birds retaining food in their crop. Two birds looked awful and in honnesty I didnt think they would make it through. I've had them on Xerec, and been putting yoghurt on their seed, plus have given charcoal tablets as well. It was after the charcoal tablets they really seemed to improve They are all bouncing fit now and looking great. Of the 2 youngsters that looked really bad, 1 has lost a lot of weight, but is putting weight back on now its eating and is active, bright eyed and getting tightness of feather back, the other one looks fine but makes a 'whooping' noise when eating, is this anything to worry about? I have these 2 young birds seperated from the main youngsters and was wondering also if it would be ok to put them back in with the others yet or to give it more time just incase??
taffacre Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 KEEP THAT ONE AWAY FROM THE REST UNTIL YOUR ABSOLUTELY SURE ITS 100%.COULD HAVE A SECONDARY INFECTION SOUNDS LIKE CANKER OR RESPITORY.
Guest shadow Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 will probably never make up to decent youngsters move them on
Roland Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 Best to let be and leave them altogether if it's y/b's sickness. The quicker it goes through the lot and they recuperate the better. Like most, if not all illnesses come to that!
Guest Denny Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 I was talking to some guys this afternoon about their pigeons and they said they reacon YB sickness is down to too much protien and to make sure they don't get to much especially with the warmer weather coming in and to be careful and watch out in giving them too much. Does anyone reacon there is something in what they say?

just ask me Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 is there really a such thing as young bird sickness is it not in most cases things like adeno virus and other illness like that and pll just say they got young bird sickness what actually is it :-/
Guest strapper Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 adeno virus is youngbird sickness. mistakingly called youngbird sickness because it was 1st commonly found in youngbirds. but in fact it can be found in oldbirds. symptoms are much weaker and usually the oldbirds show little sign of illness but for sometimes..they can get what we know as sour crop.
Guest IB Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 I've attached a survey done on some lofts in Northern Ireland hit with YBS. Just skim past the scientific jargony bits, there is enough plain language bits to give you a good feel for what is going on in the bird. You'll be surprised to see the number of things attacking it - all at the same time.. Double-click on the document name to open the PDF document, you can also save it to your desktop to have a gander later.
Guest Freebird Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 Is it not "young bird sickness" because any old birds that had it as young birds and survived are imune. Any old birds that did not have it as young birds would be suseptible to it in later life. Maybe down to treating blind at a young age? I don't pretend to know but interested to find out.

There is a suggestion that the virus eventually goes dormant in affected YBs, only to spark back to life again in the adult, and infect the next generation of youngsters..

I found this link which mentions the use of Elderberry juice! :-/ and also the use of levamisole wormer to boost the immune system and multivitamins. http://www.albertaclassic.net/chalmers1.php I did not know that there were two forms of the virus that were prone to pigeons :-/ I am really surprised how much you have to learn about pigeons - I am dreading my first poorly bird already I'll be getting them a separate medicine cabinet at this rate!
