Peckedhen Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 I have been given a wired NEHU bird this afternoon by a non fancier. It's leg is broken under the ring. I have been advised to splint it but, although I've tried, I think I've made a bad job of it. :B Would it be better left to heal naturally? The bird isn't taking its weight on the leg even though I've splinted it. I've also managed to cover the ring number so I can't report it yet. Its a hen, a gay pied blue and white checker (or something like that I was told). It's a lovely hen and deserves a chance to get home.
Guest Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 It's not getting home by the wing and as much as I commend your attempt to splint it that could be causing it pain so take the splint off and let it heal on its own. It will also give you a chance to read the ring and post it here to get a quicker response to the owner.

Peckedhen Posted June 7, 2009 Author Report Posted June 7, 2009 Thanks guys. I've taken the splint off, well actually, I'd put it on so badly it almost fell off! :B She is in a cage, on easibed, with food and water. I've posted the ring number so hope can contact owner soon. NEHU 2008 Z559
fletch Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 Hi sue my advice is to leave it and let it heal naturally, my dad always leaves them to heal themselfes as they generally heal the same with a splint or without it, Just try to keep it clean with fresh bedding and should sort it self out.
Roland Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 Found light wrapping sellotape /masking tape around a few times makes a great splint. And a darn site easier in awkward places t o get at. Norm half a match and masking / selotape does most jobs.
heather down Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 we bought plastic splints which we line with cotton wool and then encase the leg in it and close it. Been very successful a few times.
