i was having problems clearing my birds of lice/quill mites and was told that the best way to treat them was via the drinkers using moxidectin,i used a horse wormer containing moxidectin which did the trick but now some of my birds have developed bald patches on their crops and one has a bald patch on the back of his neck?  can anyone tell me what is causing the bald patches and what to treat it with?  any help would be appreciated   debbie :-/

ps although they have bald patches some still have about half inch of quill left untouched?

sounds like feather rot it pops up every now and then is it only on 1 bird ive seen it a few times but have never heard of any thing that completlt gets rid of it many have tried for years with many things but no joy

try dipping them in a bucket of duramitex mate right up to there neck, working it in with your fingers but make sure you get the mixture right or you will burn them, probably feather rot.

I believe a product called Benzyl Benzoate does the trick.

Additionally Jim George wrote in last week's BHW that applying a paste made from Sulphur and Margarine to the affected area does the trick.

Benzly Benzoate is available from chemists and sulphur from Garden Centres.

Think you are seeing the damage after the quill mite has gone, so no further treatment is required? The broken quills will moult out at the next moult. Its said to be a combination condition, the quill mite inside the feather shaft weakens it, but it takes a rubbing action against a fairly sharp surface (like the edge of a feeder or drinker bowl) to break it.

Also - not much out there on the life-cycle of this mite. If you don't know when it goes in / leaves the shaft / when & where it lays eggs, then neither the best treatment nor when to  treat, are really known.

This will sound cruel but if it is feather rot your bird has it will sort it. Pluck the bird of all the feathers that have been "cropped" back beyond the good feathers. Then completely soak the bird in "virkon s" do it every day if the weather is good enough FOR A WEEK then once or twice a week. The feathers will soon grow in and this is the best time to do it if you have to as its quite warm.

i use noramectin sheep drench , it is water based ,  in the bath at the rate of 3ml-to the gallon , in the drinker 5ml-2ltr's for 2 day's ,it can be got at any good farm shop , about £23 a ltr.

it will clear out all worm's , bar tape , used in the bath , will clear all lice & mite's , even scaley leg mite , bull head's , and tick's , quill mite's ,

Ok guys i need to stop you all there i've got the t shirt when it comes to this condition this is a post i did on another forum i use.

I had this problem in my rollers and 5 years ago i tore my hair out with it i drove to thirsk to see a specialist who couldnt tell me anything then i drove to retford in nottingham to another specialist who also couldnt give me a cure they could only tell me what the birds didnt have.

A lot of people think they cure it only to find it reapears about april may the following year. I eventually got some infomation of a proffessor in a German university through a friend and the best total cure for this mite is Frontline spray for dogs and the directions are as follows spray affected areas then repeat 1 week later then repeat after 2 weeks from then then again after 4 weeks this kills all the egg cycle and the mites.

hope this saves anyone a lot of messing and stress i suffered.

I'm not sure that it is. Have been following-up Frontline for years, its fipronil, and some papers say its OK and others say its poisonous to pigeons. Wim Peters and Frank Harper both recommend it, but I think you'll find its no longer done in a spray, its a drop, and it is over-the-counter, but packaged by dog weight, the 'weakest' being 2kg - 20kg.

Recently emailed a Vince Smith at London Natural History Museum who published a paper on his reasearch on the use of fipronil on small animals, the pigeon being one, successfully, asked him specifically about the quill mite, syringophiles, but didn't get a reply.

Also appears this mite doesn't lay eggs, it gives birth to a single larva.

It is a non-prescription medication, has been for a while, under the UK VMD Small Animals exemption scheme. Any large petshop will sell you Frontline, legal, over the counter.

ivomectin kills only 15 of the 16 mites i believe frontline spray kills all 16.
dont know about 15 or 16 mites , but i do know ivomectin sort's the mite in question , i have used most of the aforementioned treatment's  over the year's , sulpher / parafin / copper sulphate / durametex and found them all a hit & miss job , they can all kill it off but you need to get it in the burrow where the mite live's , since i started useing the sheep drench my bird's have not suffered from it , this works for me
