Guest TAMMY_1 Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 was reading the thread on canker and came acros this post, and was wanting to know if anybody else uses milton as stated in this quote, is it safe to give milton to birds at all never mind every other day. peterpau Tuesday, April 17, 2007, 7:16pm Quote Report to Webmaster Palamos awaits for those who dare Distance Fanatic Posts: 617 Gender: Male Location: warwickshire uk All pigeons carry canker and need some resistance to it. I would treat the whole flock, Sparticks will do. I would use a tablespoon of cider vinegar and half a teaspoon of milton on alternate days. One of my best stock hens has a susceptabilty to canker but the first nest are always good. Every loft is likely to have its own variant of canker, abit like the common cold. IT ISN'T pigeons are meant to race not just sit in the pen and look at
DOVEScot Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 pigeons are meant to race not just sit in the pen and look at I don't thing pigeons are meant to race but agree they are not meant to be penned in just to look at One of the origonal reasons for keeping pigeons was to supply meat through the winter no doubt people started competing between each other, some started racing and some started showing off their stock to bring us to where we are today Horses for coarses, at the end of the day they are just all genetically modified rock doves On the milton front, babies bottles are steralised in it and this being its main use for years, but I don't think a spoonful in their bottle would be good for them, by all means use it to clean your dishes but sure good clean fresh water is the best, unless you come from a region that recycles it like london, recycled up to three times I think What do you put in your own drinking water, nothing like todays pigeons get I bet, all these additives I think are wrong, if they are bleach based then it does not kill just the bad bacteria but the good. Then you have to adminnester probiotics to balance the gut
Guest Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 I disinfect the drinkers with milton but the only time I put it in the water is in their baths as it helps whiten the wattles,I do know people though who use it in the drinking water, perhaps you need to if you have a large number of birds as would I imagine stop infection through the drinkers.
mark Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 if you mix 5ml to a 4 pint drinker it keeps the slim off the bottom of the drinker have used it for a good while now. birds look fine on it,

JB STAINFORTH Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 years ago the label on a milton bottle used to say if you are going on holiday a broad you can drink the water if you put milton in first and leave for half an hour these may not be the exact words but but what it was trying to say was it steralized the water
WELSH WIZARD Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 i use milton everyday 10ml to 4pints and it does the birds no harm at all.
Guest phillip Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 Hi all . Like to share tips on disinfectants . Every now an then we seem to have an outburst of Cholera somewhere in South Africa . The Goverment state on TV , in the event of an outbreak in an area , people should sterilise their water with bleach . 1 Teaspoon to 5litres of water . I also grew up in the Rural on a smallholding and in times gone by before everybody had refrigerators , Formaline was also used to sterilise milk and preventing it from going sour too soon while it was kept in a cooler . Formaline is also used in the prevention of foot& mouth infections for livestock especially via rail . The rail trucks are all sprayed with it . Some of our members in our club also use formaline to sterilise our lofts including me . These liquids are cheap and affordable to most people compared to registered products like Virokill etc . There are pro,s & cons for and against the using of any bleaches . I personnally use JIK bleach in the drinkers and when I do not have formaline available , I also turn to JIK as a short term solution in spraying my loft . Greetings Phillip
oscar_ Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 i use milton everyday 10ml to 4pints and it does the birds no harm at all. you mean in the drinking water ? :-/
Guest phillip Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Hi all . The directions I have on a Disinfectant "Virokill" is to use with drinking water or when birds are bathing , 1ml to 10litres of water . The birds show no discomfort nor suffering any side effects from it .
WELSH WIZARD Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 you mean in the drinking water ? :-/ yes everyday in the drinkers also know a guy who does the same not done his birds any harm either.
Guest Grasshopper Lofts Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 i use the tablets every now and then 1 tab per 7 litre drinker
