aye ready Posted August 8, 2009 Report Posted August 8, 2009 I think that's the root of the bother, folk calling what they have in their loft YBS. In my opinion, there is a world of difference between a bird being off colour and a team being down with full blown YBS. 'Off colour' isn't likely to be a virus and birds aren't likely to be winning races two weeks after a full-blown viral attack. Antibiotics don't cure viruses either. Full blown YBS is a syndrome that affects young & old birds, it start with a virus (adeno- or circo- depending on the illness) and in circovirus its part of the immune system thats destroyed, allowing multiple infections in the bird all at the same time:- canker, cocci, worms, e-colii, you name it, it's likely to be there. There's a paper posted on here on work with 7 Irish lofts that had it in 2007, it'll drop your jaw what was found in these birds, working on them at one and the same time. Circovirus has been proved to go dormant and when parents with youngsters, flares up again infecting youngsters, setting up same cycle in the loft all over again. And no, we don't treat youngsters the same as 40 years ago. Trained for a fortnight before racing, program was 5 races max, they were not trained during racing, but did the program. Bred 12, left with 9/10. Lots more stress for youngsters nowadays. quote bert brasspenning BHW 24th july theres an outbreak of ecoliand i give a cure direcyly into the water after 2 or 3 days there is nothing wrongand the pigeons will soon recover.Always finish the course of treatment and for a couple of days follow on with a course of vitamins AND THEY WILL RACE THE FOLLOWING WEEK.young pigeons can become veryill from a bout of ecoli however experience has taught me they do not suffer and this i am glad to know. This is a fancier who works directly with the avian vet Dr van der sluis ,so to me thres too many members on this site that like to think they know it all but in reality know very little

Guest Posted August 8, 2009 Report Posted August 8, 2009 What part of get them seen by a vet dont you understand, if you bothered to read it properly you would have seen that, I do not condone use of antibiotics unless you have seen a qualified vet first, I have a very good qualified pigeon vet that i use and when i had ybs thats what was percribed and my birds got over the sickness very quickly. so ytou are telling me you are more qualified to give advice than my vet. Get real you muppet. :-/ WHAT YOU ON ABOUT YOU NUMPTY,YOU CAN'T FLY A KITE NEVER MIND A PIGEON AND NO IM NOT MORE QUALIFED THAN YOUR SO CALLED PIGEON VET,BUT WAS IT YBS

E-coli infection is not YBS. Compared to YBS e-coli is a fairly simple thing to treat because it is a single bacteria infection. It’s a matter of lab testing several antibiotics on an e-coli culture from your birds, and choosing the one that works best. In the paper I’m talking about, the Northern Ireland YBS cases, the researchers opened their report stating their first difficulty was getting to the bottom of what YBS actually was. Here’s what they found during autopsy in the birds with full-blown Young Bird Syndrome. Don’t bother with the left-hand column, just note that there are 12 different ‘organs’ affected. Look at the right-hand column and the list of nasties there. Most fanciers will recognize most of them. Now tell me you can cure these birds with a single antibiotic, and get them fit to race again in one week:- Disease Condition ........... Disease-causing agents present in the birds Tracheitis ..................................... Trichomonas, mixed bacteria Pneumonitis ....................................Chlamydophila psittaci Airsacculitis .................................... Trichomonas, Chlamydophila psittaci Focal / multifocal necrosis (botryoid inclusions) .........Circovirus Focal necrosis (gut-associated lymphoid tissue) .......... Suspect circovirus Lymphoid depletion ...................Suspect circovirus and / or Chlamydophila Focal white mucosal lesions...................Candida Focal esophagitis .........................Staphylococcus, Candida, Trichomonas, mixed bacteria Ingluvitis .............................Trichomonas, Candida, E coli, Pseudomonas, mixed bacteria Proventricular ulceration ...............Bacteria (not identified) Enteritis ............................Hexamita, Candida, Coccidia, mixed bacteria, worms Cloacitis ............................Hexamita, mixed bacteria As I said, YBS is different depending on who you talk to. Faced with this little lot, its a bin job for me, they end up dead anyway.
