showman Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 I know quite a few fanciers have some sort of bio-security in place, like a footbath, but does anyone use, and make visiting fanciers use any type of handwash / handwipes before handling birds ?
shaun h Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 i just wash up after mate. never really thought about doing it before hand till i read this but will consider it in future after all it will stop cross contamination of birds illness. ;)
Guest bigda Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 some times you can be to clean, where is the bio security at race marking from handlers, and other birds in the baskets and if there are a row of drinker in the truck watering 100 birds what then bio security is more if you have birds ready to sell on to be eaten on a certain week and you are getting paid by weight of the bird not wanting it to be going light on you

Going a bit far with hand wipes. Agree with with the foot dip we had that before we went in to the youngbirds 2 years back but not now. When you put your birds away you can,t tell whoever is puting your doos away to keep wipes for his hands. I would not like somebody with damp hands putting my birds through.
dwh Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 AGREE WI YA BIGDA WASTE ER TIME LOT OF VIRUS N BACTERIA R AIRBORN
Guest IB Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 Bio-security of the type described is normally only put in place in a large scale livestock business with thousands of animals, to make sure staff don't spread disease between disease-free sheds & sites. But we all practice bio-security to some degree every day in the loft. Loft coat, cleaning & disinfecting drinkers & feeders, wearing a mask, bagging & binning droppings, washing your hands - that's all bio-security too.
