You might change your mind after reading this..!

PERNICIOUS ANAEMIA

Pernicious anaemia is the result of a vitamin B12 deficiency that develops if the blood cannot properly absorb vitamin B12 from the intestinal tract. It is called a 'megaloblastic' anaemia, and occurs when the early, immature red blood cells are abnormal (a megaloblast is one type of early red blood cell with a specific abnormality). Most healthy people (except strict vegetarians) have a 3-5 year reserve in their livers of vitamin B12, which is easily absorbed from meats.

Vitamin B12 deficiency occurs when the stomach does not secrete a vital substance called 'intrinsic factor', which is required for vitamin B12 absorption in the ileum (part of the small intestine). It can also result after surgical removal of the stomach or ileum.

Pernicious anaemia often causes symptoms such as decreased appetite, weight loss, constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, swollen or painful tongue, tingling in the hands and feet, and lack of balance and coordination.

Treatment usually starts with repeated injections of vitamin B12 into a muscle. As vitamin B12 reserves accumulate, injections are needed less often. Eventually, levels of vitamin B12 are maintained by an injection once a month, but need to be continued for the rest of the patient´s life. Occasional blood tests will make sure that all is well.

The point I was trying to make is in the text - for humans, the liver stores enough supplies for 3 - 5 years unless a vegetarian. Treatment is by injection.

Most humans with pernicious anaemia are actually menopausal women !!!!!!

see your point so its not much use for humans then unless your are anemic its dissrected liver tablets I'm taking which contain a lot of B12 suppose it could just be the placebo effect but I feel on form. Had a great session tonight topped off with 5 rounds of sparring and I felt good at the end apart from a few aches and pains.

So not so good for me then but what about pigeons then?

Tony thinks its good, have you tried it for pigeons redcheqhen?

Thanks for your replies lads

Paulo - you make me feel tired..!!

B12 is in one of the preparations we use - as to whether it made a difference, who knows, we scored points sometimes and other times we didn't..!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I have a bottle of the stuff and was using it last year, and my birds came better than they have this year, maybe thats the missing link between last year and this year. I had totally forgotten I had until you put this up, so I think I see if it make a difference in our last two old bird races. Dont think it would do any harm.

we tend to think as pigeons as humans, they are completely differant, their digestive system, their brain, their sight, there temp. their coats , every thing is differant, their mainly grain eaters, with a crop, a gizard, they fly etc etc we cannot compare them with humans, and should not be treated so, if your human ,and aenemic, then there are many remedies from docs [this post is not meant to offend anyone] :) :) :)just note that i waited a few weeks to post :) :) :)

Specks here so keep it short & simple.  ;D  ;D  ;D

Why zoom in on B12? For example lots of other B's [they're called B Complex vitamin group].

Bit like saying: I've made a new bird and given it a heart.

Fine, but nae much use without liver, lungs, kidneys etc too.  ;D

Agree 10000% with redcheqhen. Unless there's something far wrong with your birds or their diet, then they should be getting all they need from what you give them to eat.

well, its kinda short for me.  :)

good points everybody. Just interested Bruno as a lot of top sportmans take B12 and noticed it was available for pigeons, plus old hand recommends it in one of his books. Jimmy makes a good point of people thinking of pigeons as humans too much when they do have different body functions etc etc.

Thanks for all your input everybody

Now for a longish one  :D

Craig put the original up, and I added some bits to his info to keep me right on some of the stuff what I'd not come across before.

Harkers Hormoform

The calculated typical analysis of Hormoform is as follows:

protein 9%,

oil  9%,

fibre 1.8%

ash 13%

vitA 18000 ius/kg

vitD3 5000 ius/kg

vitE 75 ius/kg

The nutrients contained in Hormoform include:

Vitamins A, D3, K, D1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavine), B6(Pyridoxine), B12, E (alpha tocopherol)

Plus

Chloride, Iodine, Cobalt, Copper, Manganese, Iron

Magnesium, Nicotinic Acid, (B3) Calcium Pantothenate (B5)

Biotin, IMPORTANCE: Aids in the utilization of protein, folic acid, Pantothenic acid, and Vitamin B-12, DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May lead to extreme exhaustion, drowsiness, muscle pain, loss of appetite, depression, greyish skin colour.

Inositol, IMPORTANCE: Necessary for the formation of lecithin; aids in the breakdown of fats; helps reduce blood cholesterol

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May result in high blood cholesterol.

Choline, IMPORTANCE: Very important in controlling fat & cholesterol buildup in the body; prevents fat from accumulating in the liver; facilitates the movement of fats in the cells; helps regulate the kidneys, liver & gallbladder; important for nerve transmission; helps improve memory.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May result in cirrhosis and fatty degeneration of the liver, hardening of the arteries, heart problems, high blood pressure, hemorrhaging kidneys.

Amino Benzoic Acid IMPORTANCE: Aids healthy bacteria in producing folic acid; aids in the formation of red blood cells; aids in the assimilation of Pantothenic acid;

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May cause extreme fatigue, irritability, depressions, nervousness, headaches, digestive disorders.

Lysine, Cystine Glycine, Calcium, Sodium Chloride

Phosphorus, Zinc, Formic Acid, Arginine

Methionine, Tryptophane.

Feeding instructions

Resting birds – 57gm (2 oz) hormoform per 450gm (16oz) feed daily

Racing birds – 71 gm (2.5oz) hormoform per 450 gm (16oz) feed daily

Breeding bird – 86 gm (3oz) hormoform per 450 gm (16oz) feed daily

Point of the post is really an add-on to what I'd said before. If you feel the birds should be treated say like human athletes, and given whole diet supplements etc, then maybe a scientifically balanced all-round formula (like wots already available from many makers of pigeon specifics) might be the best way to go?

;D ;D ;D Still  to short bruno :o :o what page from what book was that?///////////////

Nice one cheers for the info Bruno. I've tried homoform for the first time this year while breeding and was impressed with the results I got. Only thing is its fairly expensive (but I suppose its cheaper buying something thats got pretty much everything in) and the birds don't seem to like it that much. However was more than happy with the young birds I bred on it. Heres a picture of the last one I bred lovely bird bright as a button with nice silky feathers. Suppose its easier feeding like you say a scientifically balanced formula than messing around with all the different gear available. Its confusing with the sheer range of products available on the market to know what to give the birds.

I've come to the conclusion its all a plot to part us pigeon men and women from our hard earned cash.

yes i would give my racing pigeons vit b complex thats why i mixed the brewers yeast with the depurative ,and other vits  ;D ;D ;D i thought speck meant she was eating it herself;D ;D  the depurative is easily digested, but doesnt contain the vits of normal grain, but handy to keep the weight off them for short to middle distance races, when needed :) :) :)so for a long way round ,,,i agree with you speck ;D ;D ;D ;D, but could have put the post longer ;D ;D ;D
