Guest Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 I hand reared a squeaker from 2 days old on it about 3 years ago,it was recomended to me by pigeon rescue as the most suitable food for such a young bird,as the bird got to about 8-10 days old I then mixed small seed with it gradually,I still have the said squeeker, infact just paired him up again today,he was the biggest strongest YB of that year fed on that stuff!,I ordered it from the pet shop and it wasn't cheap but it was obviously good stuff.

That's fascinating Chrissy, I thought pigeon soft food was impossible to replicate and you cannot make a good job of rearing a yb unless it was onto hard food ( 8 days ). Thats very interesting to know.Did you race this yb Chrissy ?

Thats very interesting to know.Did you race this yb Chrissy ? I thought at 2 days it was going to be hopeless but I had to try!,I had hand reared before but on older ones using corn, pigeon rescue weren't phased at all they said they do it all the time using the egg food.At the time I didnt race I just bred them for showing and the bird has taken a few cards, certainly none the worse for being hand reared,he also has the top perch! and he did appear in a play for 10 days last month via pigeonbasics [strange but true]
newbold Posted December 10, 2008 Author Report Posted December 10, 2008 hi chrissy ,you can make it your self its verry easy . and alot cheeper. phill

WHen I used to breed canaries I mixed 50/50 Egg biscuit and pheasant rearing crumbs (that contained antibiotics) and never had a youngster die on me in the nest.

DeDarren Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Did anybody see the letter from the owner of Osmonds in this week's BHW asking for fanciers to test out cow's collostrum for them during the coming breeding season? According to said owner of Osmonds, it has a lot of proven health benefits in other animal related industries when used as a breeding / rearing supplement.
