GREENGRASS Posted November 24, 2005 Report Posted November 24, 2005 I was just wondering which brand of feeding everybody uses, i have tried many but found that Versele Laga were the most consistent and of a higher quality, what do you think of the different varieties and brands. I understand there are a lot of local brands to specific areas so if you posted other could you please let us know which ones and how you rate them, thanks.
westy Posted November 24, 2005 Report Posted November 24, 2005 at the moment i use corn from the local pet shop i spend about £4 a week on corn from there in jan i am going to buy a big bag to save money.
westburylofts Posted November 24, 2005 Report Posted November 24, 2005 we use versa laga, Gerry Plus and Super widowhood Plus Gerry Plus all year round. RAY
Guest WINGS 04 Posted November 24, 2005 Report Posted November 24, 2005 i feed all my birds on swainstons from the last race to 2 weeks be for the first race then go on to versa lager super widowhood old birds
Guest Silverwings Posted November 24, 2005 Report Posted November 24, 2005 using a varied mix of bamfords moulting,de scheemaeker ,moulting and a mariman racing mix ,mix all three together let them choose the grains the like, and eat as much as they like ? this time of year , ( dont skimp mysef either ) two more tatoes than a pig ?
Guest Posted November 24, 2005 Report Posted November 24, 2005 Sympathise with you Westy. Posted in the old forum that I reckoned one of the best things the Corn folks could do for new starters with their few pigeons, was to have smaller bags for them. I'd a bother finding a supplier, 'the Co-op' used to have pigeon mixture and now doesn't and my local pet shop doesn't stock it either, or anything else for pigeons for that matter. Watch that the cost of travel doesn't take away the benefit of the bigger bag, Westy. Being a member of the poor branch of the family, just going for my stuff costs me £2.50 -and whatever happened to delivery??
Guest shadow Posted November 25, 2005 Report Posted November 25, 2005 Having used versa laga and bucktons I don't see how versa laga can justify their prices.
Guest Posted November 25, 2005 Report Posted November 25, 2005 what do you think of Bucktons new red corns? were at blackpool show 2005, Red and Yellow corns is the same or different ?
alan_smith Posted November 25, 2005 Report Posted November 25, 2005 Versa Laga SIMPLY THE BEST :K) Alan
james_mc_laughlin Posted November 25, 2005 Report Posted November 25, 2005 Was very impressed by the Bucktons irish ruby when saw it in the blackpool show also. Had problems getting the old birds used to the red maize. noticed the quality in the mix dropping so I went back to using versalaga.
ian_jones Posted November 25, 2005 Report Posted November 25, 2005 They only show a special mix of corn at the shows. dust free and highly polished but what you get when you buy from your corn merchants. Versa laga all ways seems up to the high standards. Ian
GREENGRASS Posted November 25, 2005 Author Report Posted November 25, 2005 that is what i found, at the shows you see a lovely mix dust free and highly polished but you never got the same bag twice. i once tipped a bag of mix into the corn bin and nearly choked on the dust and chaff that came out of it. but with versele laga the quality of the grains was always consistent. it may be that little bit more expensive but you are getting the best and also they do a lot of research into the nutritional needs of our birds.
red_devil Posted November 25, 2005 Report Posted November 25, 2005 Think the last two posts say it all. agree with them totaly greg davis
Guest slugmonkey Posted November 26, 2005 Report Posted November 26, 2005 I am pretty lucky as I live in a farming area I buy all my grain in 50 lb bags and mix it myself I get corn, milo, wheat, I even have locally grown sunflower avaible 90% of the time the grain is perfect but I occasionaly get a dusty bag I just learned that I can also have the feed mixed and bagged here also
andy Posted November 26, 2005 Report Posted November 26, 2005 WHEN RACING SUPER DIET1000 & SUPER PLX FROM BOSMOLEN NOW OWNED BY VERSE-LAGA-SIMPLY THE BEST...................
frank-123 Posted November 29, 2005 Report Posted November 29, 2005 been racing three years tried gerry plus, natural, elite now my birds on marimans still dont know what to race on think ill try and mix them all not got a clue?
Guest Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 I use V-Laga Super-widowhood early races, only breaking down to a depurative if the weather is mild and then gradually change to V-Laga Best All-round as the distance increases. A good tip I got this year is if you buy your corn a few bags at a time and you have plenty of room, try to get hold of an old fridge, lay it on its side and use this to store you corn. This stops any damp getting to it.
darlo_flyer Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 its got to be versa laga its the best i've seen so far..........westy your have you got alot of birds or is your pet shop ripping you off i have 30 and it does not cost me that much to feed them you need to find a corn store or animal feed store that might order your corn in for you
perk Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 changed to a farm supplier six weeks ago, been using resting mix with beans and barliy.its half the price of top brands and the birds are exersising better
Pompey Mick Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 does anyone feed beans anymore? I have always used beans as a self-regulating hopper feed as well as mixtures for control & condition. I always start my young birds on beans before feeding mixtures. They only take what they need and very rarely over indulge. When I use mixtures I use Bosmolen.
perk Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 mick,i use beans alot one of best grains for rearing. club mate feeds 50% beans to old bird racers, last few years has won most races plus 3x 1st section mnfc
speedbird Posted December 9, 2005 Report Posted December 9, 2005 versa laga super widowhood & gerry plus a real good mix
AlanWilkins Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 ok i voted Versele Laga but thats me base mix i use other stuff but its human consumption
Guest Paulo Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 gerry plus is the boy for young bird racing
mark Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 i have gone back to how i used to feed beans maples and tares. cant be bothered with the state of the art bull sh** mixes.
