Hogni Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 Much has been said about protein in pigeon feed and how much it should be and that it must be controlled, but in your opinions what is the ideal amount in % in lets say a breeding mixture, a flying mixture and a young bird mixture?
jimmy white Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 in my opinion , not such an easy question to answer in a short post,, basicly agree with above 14pc racing in general, but i would vary the amount due to many circumstances i,e the type of racing etc ,,sometimes a breeding mixture can be confused with a rearing mixture , where in my opinion, plenty of protein is needed,,, as in a breeding mix [mating up], sitting,,, less protein ,, yb,s flying over 6 weeks less protein,, b4 this plenty, birds moulting need more protein , after moult less protein etc etc ,, so, really no easy answer
Guest strapper Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 i race on a high protein mix, adding beans when the distance gets around 200mls, mine get loads of peanuts. i find my birds prefer this mix .
wilkins Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 barley as a base for me, with protein added during breeding and heavy road training (enforced) to get them to fly at home low protein
Guest Freebird Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 barley as a base for me, with protein added during breeding and heavy road training (enforced) to get them to fly at home low protein So for flying at home what would be your mix, thanks.
wilkins Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 2 parts barley/ 1 wheat/1 general mix/ half pellets/quarter rape seed a little light feed in the morning then out after half hour, then full feed a night all they want once they race add a gerry plus from wednesday afternoon to friday morning,
leighton1984 Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 check what the top flyers are using. right feed at right time of the week.
wilkins Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 was going to add but forgot and now out of time , add protein powder or a few peas on sunday if the race has been hard, (got timed out on my edit) should be no need for fats in the mix as the distance will not be that far for the babies
leighton1984 Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 fat is very good for pigeons at the right time to use it
wilkins Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 yes leighton agree ,but it has to be used im not to sure that it will be of any use for ybs in the shorter flights , maybe a lttle sunflower could be added, but i have a little rape in the mix as well since i used the rape i have saved money on oils which are sold for feathering of which i was very keen on but the feather quality of the ybs is just as good
leighton1984 Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 they is that many grains to feed are pigeons what the best mix. i think we need to check are birds by hand and by eye only way.

Guest slugmonkey Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 I wouldnt say lighter and certainly not what you would call a depurative
Ronnie Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 i was allways told protein for repairing and carbs for energy. Also the fats (the right sort of fats)contain slow release energy like Peanuts and oats. Slugmonkey do you carb load for the distance race's?
Guest slugmonkey Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 NO I give fat and protien for all races there are two types of muscle fast and slow the fast burn protien and the bigger groups burn fat and carbs then protien if birds have a lot of dissolved fat in system they will burn these first and these are also cleaner burning than carbs since I started giving more fat and protien my results have improved dramatically

If you could put up your program (miles) it would give me a better understanding on the why's and whatfors on the way you feed. Cheers.
