BANDIT Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 split your birds up again and put them on 50% barley and if they start leaving the barley cut back on the food, maybe they are to fat and the cold dont help either.pair them back together in arround 3 weeks.have you lights in your loft if so extend the day by atleast 4 hours and that should also help.

cowman Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 i put my hens in on boxing day and all 8 pairs have been sitting 2 eggs for 6 days now .
Guest frank dooman Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 i paired 15 pair on the 26th boxing day so did my friend 1st pair laid in 10 days by the 12th day 6 pair 1st egg all but 2 pair now down but my friend had to wait till 15/16 days for 1st pair and he only has 5 pr down today the only difference was mine were getting out his were not so the posts are bang on both cold and fat will hold them up starve them cimpletly for 24hrs and cut down the feeding untill they lay
holmsidelofts Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 Hens tend to suffer with internal fat that you dont really see, thats why its important to get them on barley for a week or 2 before pairing, remember that the birds aint doing anything this time of the year and we are feeding them heavy for the moult so they will hold a little fat. I also think that when you get empty eggs this time of the year its one of the following, If one egg is full i would bet the first one got chilled between being laid and the birds sitting when the second one laid. If both are empty it could due to the cold as it effects the cocks testicles and in the off season they also shrink so you have to bring them into breeding condition by first getting them on barley then start to increase the good corn and increase the daylight this will stimulate the cock into breeding condition and get him sexual active again. I really dont believe that if a hen doesnt lay for a long length of time its the cold. I would always say they are fat and not in breeding condition yet. I have seen fanciers with open fronted lofts with snow blowing in on the perches and they still lay no issues. Jas.

pearse1888 Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 i would say the cold .. few of my birds werent keen to start with .. split them up for a week and give them some hemp .. might fire them up a bit
jimmy white Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 frank the lad asked for advice and many including yourself have givin it to him, birds to fat heavy and cold weather, cut them back split them and put the lights on . job done would agree here,, but would be reluctant to use lights for race birds at this time, ,prisoner stock birds tend to put on fat very easy at this time and will eat more in this cold weather then hinder the breeding, ,breeding birds getting out each day , will loose fat with driving etc, probably natures way in preparing them to lay etc.
