splodge Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 Hi All I know nothing about pigeons so excuse my ignorance. A bird took up residence in our garden near Marlborough, Wiltshire last week. We have been unable to catch it but it can fly, seems healthy and quite content wandering around. On its wing is the number 710081. What does this signify? The ring on its right leg is red and on the left green with an orange panel. Anyone recognise him/her? Regards Colin
REDCHEQHEN Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 the green ring with orange panel is an ETS ring - the other leg (red ring ) has the birds life ring number - this is more imprtant - however - the stamp on its wing is likely to be the owners telephone number - if you were able to pick the bird up - and look at the wing feathers - you will probably find the STD CODE
pigeonpete Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 Hi splodge, thanks for the post, the ring with the window is an electronic timing ring, the number on the wing will be the persons phone number, so the std code will be further in, and the other rinr (pinK?) will be its i.d ring i.e gb=country, letter follwed by 5 digits, if you can read those then we will be able to help further. :-) catching it would be even better. many thanks for your efforts.
Williedoo Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 Think the phone number will be on the orange pannel .
DJ Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 hi splodge have u got a shed or outbuilding that u can leave open to try and encourage it into? it will eat small seeds such as budgie seed, barley, rice etc if u left some by and a trail leading inside an open door or a cage then it may walk in allowing u to catch it? also has it got access to water as it is probably thirsty thank u for trying to help this lost racing pigeon debbie
splodge Posted August 11, 2009 Author Report Posted August 11, 2009 Hi Debbie, there has been an open basket near where he wanders for about 3 days and he is not interested. There is wild bird food in there and scattered all around. He enjoys the food but he shows no interest in entering the basket. As I write, he's flown off somewhere but this is not unusual and he'll no doubt be back later. Regards Colin
DJ Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 hi colin, maybe u could try putting the seed at the back of the basket so he has to walk in to get to it if he can get food outside of the basket then he will just eat that can u post a pic of the basket u are using? u may be able to rig up a piece of string that closes the basket when/if he goes inside debbie
splodge Posted August 11, 2009 Author Report Posted August 11, 2009 Hi debbie. The basket is an old BA cat basket but with the door missing (God knows where that went to). The plan is to throw a blnket over the door once he's inside. Luckily for him the cat is no longer with us although he has become friendly with our German Shepherd (who usually chases pigeons) Colin

DJ Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 hi colin, if u have a large cardboard box then cut the bottom out and put it in the middle of your garden and prop it up with a stick (about 10inch high) then tie a piece of string to the bottom of the stick and run the string along the ground tightly to your back door, then put some seed right under the box and when the pigeon walks under to eat the seed u just pull the string quickly and the box will fall on top of him him just put a few seeds by the box to encourage him but not many when he gets hungry enough he will go under the box ive seen it done myself so know it works good luck and keep us posted debbie
