andyyy Posted January 27, 2019 Report Posted January 27, 2019 Quick question, what’s the best accommodation for widowhood hens at this time of year? They’ve been currently kept in a loft with access to an aviary at the weekends, due to be paired within the next few weeks so are quite proud and flirty but in order to get a few tweaks done to the loft they use, options are to leave them in the aviary 24/7 on poles? Or put them in the YB section where there’s box perches? Every reply will be much my appreciated 😊
n5gbc Posted January 28, 2019 Report Posted January 28, 2019 Keep them as they are on poles in box perches they will soon pair with each other then its game over for you .If through the moult and you are not keeping ybs off them put them on barley and keep them on fine rations
alex young Posted January 28, 2019 Report Posted January 28, 2019 I've no option other than keeping them on wid/hens perches and they do pair,I exercise them daily and feed them less than 1oz a day but get the odd few that pair.I have to lock one of the pair in a darkened box and alternate this daily with the other hen, then as I take the hen out of the box I put it in with it's cock for a couple of minutes. It's a pain but as I race these hens it is a big problem if they pair again when it comes to racing.
