Roland Posted December 5, 2018 Report Posted December 5, 2018 A friend, good friend who age 16 joined the marines... they like all services allowed themselves to be conned regards age etc. Lived in a small market town like me. Any road he won the Victoria cross saving many at great peril to himself. He sent the Medal back stating others were involved and should also be rewarded. Back came the reply stating though some truth it was HIM that did so and so and such. He said stuff you, keep it. 50 odd years later his grandson said he would have liked that.... So he wrote to the prime minister John Major. Had a reply within days. Had the medal back within the fortnight. when he died no one remembered him. No media recollect. Another, a brother of a friend won the St. Georges Cross. He was brought up over the road from me in the same small market town. His ship went down in the North Sea. and he was severely burned all over. He dragged a women and son 20 odd miles - another son took his life jacket off and drowned. 1952 it was, and it was in the papers and news etc. Became a high ranking officer. When he died, no one remembered. No local paper or any media... just forgotten. What am I saying? I don't know... But feel it is a shame etc.
