adam you right there we use householdblinds to darken the loft.sill allows air in unlike if you used shutters.as for your floor :-/

we cut a hole in the floor,roughly in the middle and just cover with fine mesh .size is up to you.ours is a ft sq.also easy to cover again with a board.

we used an ordinary wooden 24in sputnik,put your pad in then just a thin bit of ply on top so the birds drop on to it,no need for anything fancy .
