Pigeon Planner - Organise and manage your pigeons
Timo replied to Timo's topic in Website News, Views & Computer Related Info
Hey Bob, I'm afraid that's not possible because the programs use different databases. There is also no trial of the program, so I can't check if the database can be converted to the Pigeon Planner format. -

For the people that are using the program and for those interested, I released version 0.5.4 today. A few new things were added, such as: Arabic language, option to optimize and remove database. Along with alot of fixes and improvements. I also made a new logo, the old one was still something I quickly made when I needed it . When installing this new version, it'll also uninstall the previous one. Don't worry, your database with your pigeons and results will stay! -
Microsoft Office isn't free. A copy of the program is illegal. You should indeed try OpenOffice which Tony C pointed to. It is a great office suite!

Thats because an anti-virus program mainly detects virusses and anti-spyware tools search for spyware (hence the names). On a windows computer you should always have 2 programs to be relatively save: an anti-virus and anti-spyware program. SUPERAntiSpyware is indeed a good program. Another good and free one is Spybot ( http://www.safer-networking.org ) and Ad-Aware (not free).
-
I also use Linux (Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/ ) for some years now, and I will never go back to Windows. It feels good to just use your computer without the fear of getting virusses and malware.
-
Doesn't really matter. On the mirrors page ( http://www.safer-networking.org/nl/mirrors/index.html ) you can select either one. It's always the same version, but they mirror it to save the server some load.
-
I don't know about windows defender, but AVG doesn't clean up malware. Spybot ( http://www.safer-networking.org ) is a great and free tool to cleanup all kinds of malware.

What do you mean "a page full of garbage"? You mean after scanning your computer? Well, than it did its job, no? :-) Just repair everything and repeat it once a week (don't forget to update).
-
You don't need a pop-up blocker, and defragging is definatly not going to solve your problem (read up on defragmentation). You're probably infected by some kind of malware. Check your system with your anti-virus. Also download and install Spybot ( http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Spybot-Search-Destroy/1043809773/1 ) and let it scan your computer. If you've done that, try Mozilla Firefox ( www.mozilla.com/firefox/ ) with the adblock plus plugin ( http://adblockplus.org/en/ ) as your default browser.

Maybe you are referring to me? The program I wrote is called Pigeon Planner and can be obtained from this website: http://pigeonplanner.sourceforge.net The program is stable and usable. It has the basic features like adding your pigeons (details and picture), pedigree, relatives and results. But I always like feedback from people who would like to see some new features, I'm happy to work on that.

Little announcement about the new version (0.5.0). The major new feature is the ability to add/edit/remove pigeons directly in the pedigree (detailed view). There is also a search option and a logviewer in the menu. The logviewer will be more userfriendly in case of an error. Download at http://pigeonplanner.sourceforge.net/en/download.php -

Thank you grizzler. Let me say that I am very happy to hear if people do use it. As I don't earn any money with it (although donation is possible), it keeps me going to hear people working with it and have suggestions to improve. Thanks all. -

That's just not true. If I asked 100 euro for my program, it would be better? It is a myth (and people do believe it) that commercial software is better than free. But I can honestly tell you, and not just because my program is free, that commercial software usually is inferior to free software. No software is guarenteed to work. No matter how much you pay for it. But if you don't like the program, that's ok for me. We are free to choose our own, and if other software suits you better, I will not argue on that . That's why there is alot of software that does the same, so that everyone can choose their favorite. -

0.4.8 is currently the latest version. You can check manually by going to Tools=>Updates. Or in the Preferences you can turn on automatic update check. thomasd: It works on Windows 2000 and higher (XP, Vista, 7, ...) and Linux. -

fits: I fixed the problem. The new version will be released somewhere in the next week. I made lots of work in the detailed pedigree. You can now add, remove and edit parents in the pedigree directly, without adding them to the list (usefull for pigeons you don't own for example). So, still some days testing and I'll put it online. Thanks chickadee, I'm very pleased to hear that . -

fits, thanks for the compliment. You are right, I never noticed it before, but if you change a pigeons ringnumber, it won't get saved. All other details (name, colour, etc.) are working correctly, right? I will hunt this down and fix it. Thanks for mentioning it! -

Thanks grizzler . Ulsterman: When you are adding a pigeon (by pressing the plus sign top left), you can click on the large square with the program logo inside at the detailsview (underneath the entry's where you put the ring number and name). It will open a filechooser where you can navigate to your picture. To remove a picture, right-click on that square and select "Remove". This also works when editing a pigeon. -

Ok great . I'm planning on making some documentation too. A little beginners guide or something. So much plans... Oh, general info: the website can now be reached at http://www.pigeonplanner.com, it's a bit easier than the previous one. -

You mean you installed and run the program fine? Inside the program you can't just type in the details field. You need to add a pigeon by pressing the Add-button, that will make the details field editable. -

No pairing features yet. These are planned for the future though. Every pigeon has an "Extra" box where you can enter 6 lines of extra details for that bird. This will be shown on the pedigree in the box below the ring number. The pedigree is calculated by taking the parents of the pigeon, then again the parents and so on. So you need to add every pigeon in the list before it shows up in the pedigree. I'm thinking of making it able to edit pedigrees without adding the pigeons. To print a pedigree you can click on "View detail" on the bottom of the program (Pedigree tab). A new window will popup with a detailed pedigree and on the top left you can press "Print". -

Oh that's great. I just tested on another Vista computer and no problems there either. In theory it can hold unlimited pigeons. But the program might get slow if it needs to read many pigeons. At this moment I have 160 birds in my list and don't notice any performance issues. -

I just tested on Vista and have no problems at all. Are you sure that you have installed version 0.4.6? You can see that in top of the program or by clicking "About" next to the quit button. -

I don't know every format it supports, but it should be able to get all major formats such as jpeg, png, bmp, gif, tiff and so on. What kind of format are you trying to load? Does it give an error? What platform are you using (windows?)? -

That's not good Steve. I have honestly no idea what is wrong, cause here everything seems fine with the website. Maybe your browser is blocking exe files as a security measure. Fred: It's free because I believe in free and open-source software. That's why I'm using Ubuntu (Linux) instead of Windows or Mac OS X as my operating system. Ofcourse, alot of time and work go into this project, and I'm all doing this for free. So if you like this program and want to support further development (and think of the money you save from a commercial product), you can donate a small amount of money (the button is on the website). This is absolutely not required, everyone is allowed to use this program for free.
