well the birds are long gone... i didnt even think of that and after finishing finals i just got back to my beloved internet. i cleaned the loft after the two deaths. i plan on doing it again tommorrow. what would be symptoms of mouse contamination? i have started to knotice mouse droppings in my store room. i bought a trap tonight and will place it in the morning. and i will be cleaning out the trays also. my food is locked up tight so if he was getting anywhere it would be some of the left over food in the trays!

two ideas here. first looking at the ratio of ash reds to wild type blues i have knoticed A) birds sent into one loft races tend to be blue and the winners also tend to be those blues (of course 3 out of 30 birds have a far less chance of winning than the 27 of 30) Feral flocks are 95% wild type blues. i am beginning to wonder if it is conscience or if hawks go after red birds more than blues... Any Ideas?

i have a few pairs that i am forcing to bond. they have been together since thanksgiving weekend and havent bonded yet. these are all older birds 98-02. and most have been paired before with other birds. we are thinking about puting a light in to increase the day. i know that the day length has a bit to due with breeding. but i also know that domestic pigeons will breed all year long if given the chance. any advise here would be appreciated.

has anyone given them 200ui gel pills?

two days ago i went out to feed my birds and knoticed a dead cock. these birds were in my breeding loft. so i figured someone just was trying to take over his nest box and he died in the fight. but today i had a hen die in a locked box with just her cock. she didnt even look dead at first b/c she was sitting like a hen does on eggs. i can see nothing wrong with them nor any of the other birds. the werent skinny nor had canker. it has been getting into the upper 30's here and had rain and fog. i gave all my birds an antibotic that goes in the water and turns it yellow. cant remember the name off hand. after they finish their five day stretch i will give them either garlic or Apple cider vinger. also i freshly cleaned their poop trays so i can watch how they look. any advise would be great.

http://www.pigeonbasics.com/forum/blah/v-post/b-gen/m-/a-/q-/post-1/n-/ just incase you were wondering who i am... you can use the above link. if the above post had anything to do with me, i would like an apology. when i started this thread i thought that another thread had been deleted. but i was wrong and said sorry. i even accepted the reasons for people not wanting to talk about how to cull. Not that people would read it but maybe there should be a sticky on topics that arent accepted well on this forum. i strongly suggest that when you delete someones thread you PM them to tell them why and that it even happened. Bruno, i apperciate everyones opinions and time they spent answering my questions. i agree it might have been better to post "how" under my original post on that poor bird. i however was hoping to get a better response by placing it in a different catigory. i wish there was a spell check... shesh i spell like a mule

Hello, i am 26 years old and a Leo. I just recently moved back to my hometown and was able to build a loft. I have been raised around a lot of fanciers. and have noticed they all have similiar ideas and vastly different ideas. I am one of the youngest in my club as no one my age is really joining the sport. unfortunately as the older fanciers "die" out there isnt anyone to replace them. by the time i am their age there may not be a sport in the USA. As much as i know about pigeons- i dont know everything. There is a vast amount of knowlege to be accessed on the internet. The two things i am looking into the most is pigeon breeding and pigeon genetics. Make that three: Pigeon Nutrition. I consider myself very smart and i learn very quickly. i cant spell worth a darn... but everything else seems easy to me. what i cant find on the internet i as on the forums. This is the best out of the three i visit. This year i am partnered with a fellow in the club and will be breeding birds in my loft but racing out of his. I have actually taught him a few tricks with the information i have learned here and some of the better genetics websites. There is nothing i enjoy more than coming home and letting my birds out to fly. Even when i am driving through town i watch to ferals as they twist and turn. Unfortunately, i have had to keep my flying team locked up because i have a resident hawk. I have bought a Hawk Ball. (big mirror ball from Jedds.com) that is supposed to fool the hawk into thinking there is another hawk and that he might become dinner himself. If that doesnt work i will have to Relocate his *expletive removed*. I am myself an animal lover of all kinds. i do my best to never harm animals and even bugs. except i will kill any mosqiuto, black spider, or ant. I have, in my life, had to end an animals life to end its suffering. one of the sadest days was a rabbit who had become paralyzed from the mid back down. flies had laid eggs on her and the maggots were eating her alive. the only cruel thing would have been to let her die that way. I am an open book. i tend to get in trouble when people are not used to blunt and honest answers. i will answer any question someone asks. i dont consider it rude if someone asks how much i paid for my car or pay on my house. If you would like to ask me any question feel free to PM me.

well after reading a few posts my partner and i have decided to try Vit E this year. but our problem is that we cant figure out how much to give the birds. the smallest pill i saw on the shelf was something like 200ui or something like that. edit: you know... everytime i say my partner i feel like i really need to say my Flying partner. as my life partner, my wife!, is not really into flying pigeons. hmmm maybe i should find another word for flying partner and then i wont have to worry about it. ;D haha

his wattle is turning white. should be the age to fly. this bird was not eating correctly and is way under wieght. i am hand feeding it seed to bring up its wieght. basically it squeeks b/c i am feeding it. however it also precives me as an threat. therefore squeek - food squeek - threat i am worried about a respitory infection. i just need to know if anyone has heard of this change of "voice"
-
i have a squeeker. he is rather old and his wattle is starting to turn white. i have him in isolation. he squeeks alot when i handle him for his doses. however lately his squeek has sounded very similiar to a goose or something. almost like a childs voice cracking squeek squeek squeooowck sqooowck squeek i never heard a bird do this. usually when i see them they just stop squeeking all together. symbro i know there wasnt an actually question i just need advise about the situation

my breeding loft has locking nest boxes and only the birds i am using to breed with. so my cocks are locked in the boxes and my hens are flying loose and there are no cocks for them to pair up with accidentally. i am having a problem with two pairs. they are either too young are females. one is a red check with that black ticks. which most people agree means it is a cock. but i think he is too young. i have another pair i wont be breeding at all this year but they are both indigo bars so i wanted them to bond. i think they are both female though :*) my other six pairs are well bonded and seperated.
-
i have six pairs that are bonded. and two pairs i am trying to have bond. the six pairs that are currently bonded - the cock is locked in the nest box bowl and his hen is flying in the breeder loft. the two pairs that i want to bond - both bird are locked in the nest with the bowl as soon as i see they are bonded i planned to seperate them. it is getting to the point where it might be too late. i am planning on only breeding one round. i will be reintroducing the hens back to the cocks all at the same time so that they all lay their eggs so the babies are about 8 days old on jan 1st - jan 8th. but i dont understand how the bowl effects the birds. i dont know if leaving it in there now is ok or if i should remove it till i put them back together. And i dont know if i should have a bowl in with the birds i am trying to get to bond.
-
when do i place the nest bowls in with pairs? do i place a nest bowl in with two birds i am trying to get to bond? do i leave a nest bowl in with the cock when i seperate the hens? do i replace the bowl the day i put the hens back in with the cocks? ahhhhhh please help me. right now i have the bowls in the nest boxes with the cocks locked in and i have the hens free flying in the same room. i dont have another room to put the hens :*( Symbro

what about the bonded pairs. when they twitch their wings around eachother
-
i cant help but to study pigeon behavoir. This wing twitching is really interesting. i first knoticed it with bonded pairs. usually, but not always, the cock dances around his hen while she squats and twitches her wing. however i have also have a bird that i am taking care of. its wattle is still not white and its tenth flight has almost reached its full length. when i reach in to grab him to feed he bites and wing slaps me. but, now here it is, when i stand above the carrier which is at waist hieght, the baby twitches his wing. if the baby didnt peck and wing slap me i would take the wing twitching as a sign of him respecting my dominance. any ideas?
-
thank you that is exactly what i thought it was. however i was told (my race days are always saturday) to allow the hens and cocks together every saturday race or not.
-
aye... to use the word quote lightly :*)

my quess would be when people are flying both hens and cocks using widowhood and fly one at a time and having them trap into seperate rooms...
