geting them back into the loft

yeah, but not on demand, these are my only birds, so no old ones to sho,w them the ropes my general routine is let them out at about 5.30pm, after work, i then clean the loft, and feed them, they`ll be back in within 2 hours, or if i want ill leave them out for longer, are they simply not hungry enough, they get 2 and half spoonfuls each of beyer young bird mix, no maize every day, how does that sound -
i have my young birds beating me back from 20 mile training tosses, no bother there, only thing is, they just mess about on the roofs, and wont actually come back into the loft for ages any tricks i can use? i was thinking of filling up the feeding tray, while their in the basket, that way they see food in the loft, and they`ll go back in, or am i kidding myself? any suggestions would be great lads

delighted to hear about that Bake, thats great news!!

a mate of mine has a trap door as well, put the basket on the outside, then just walks to the birds into it, ingenius!!!
-

no vomiting, as i said, its just the one, but came on very suddenly, so i havent noticed anything untoward ,the bird is odd, its just standing there on the landing board of the sputnik, its been there for an hour, i pt some feed on the board, she started picking, looked ok for 10 minutes, then back to standing like a statue should i seperate her for the evening, as in take her from the loft or just lock her in the nest boxes? and what the treatment, if any is there for young bird sickness. oh, and watery droppings, i just noticed that now
-
let the birds out today, and noticed one of the birds didnt do much flying, now, its just sitting on the top of the loft not doing much, and kinda puffed up the bird is 3 months old, and was vaccinated, i bought it from louella, and i think they come pre treated now the bird has seemed to have paired up with one of the cocks, but she§s definetly too young to lay an egg isnt she? these are me and my dads first pigeons, hence the panic cheers lads

what do you need to have in your pigeon shed
chrisbonnie replied to a topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
floor grit is pretty nifty, i just got it the other week for my loft, just lay it on thick ,then rake it every day, you`ll only have to change the grit every few weeks, depending on how many birds you have -
so you race with 30 ybs? how many in your stock loft? im just trying to gauge how many stock birds ar eneeded, and how many ybs they`ll produce, space is an issue out my back garden, so i just want to know some loft sizes, amount of birds etc...
-
yeah, good marine ply, it`ll never rot, plus its smooth for cleaning, not like chip board
-
i take it you couldnt send to ireland could you?
-
thanks for the replies lads, ill think we`ll just build the new loft as planned, transfer the 12 into it, then breed off of them, or possible even buy some stock only birds, sure ill play it by ear for the minute as a matter of interest, in a 10x6 loft ,what kinda numbers would be ok?
-
would you not be afraid of losing them? seeing as there's only 12 pigeons all together
-
No1 theres no chance of 120 birds in our back garden, its bloody tiny enough as it is unfortunetly regarding the competitive part, its more of a hobby, with a little adrenaline as well
-
12 ybs now, or in the new year, he`s getting a bigger loft this week, a 10x8, plus he has a 6x4 that i think will eventuall be a stock loft
-
how`s it going lads here`s the deal, my dad has gotten back into the pigeons recently, at the minute, he only has 12 ybs`, accumalated from friends in the pigeon game, now, he definetly does want to race come next year, as i think its safe to say, that this year is too early as he only has 12 ybs`now, will he need to get more ybs this summer, hoping they`ll breed there own ybs come the new year, or would he better buying new ybs next year? about how many birds would you need for your average season, accounting for losses and all any help would be great lads

buying ybs(in Ireland)
chrisbonnie replied to chrisbonnie's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
racing my dad has only gotten back into pigeons after 30 years, so this will actually be his first time racing them, its just, he`s not affiliated to a club just yet(he has enquired), so with his bigger loft in the process of being built, id like to get him a few more pigeons for it -
