Three Borders Federation: Season News 2025 (Okehampton Race). The Three Borders Federation were at Okehampton for the fourth old bird race and the convoy had a hard fly home being liberated with sun on the baskets at 08.15hrs into an east / north east wind situation. The Federation convoyer, Dom McCoy is very ‘smart’ and liberated the birds as early as possible to avoid clashing with other Federations and the members enjoyed a steady, but good race. The new Federation secretary, Stuart Emans of the Mitcham & Merton club, has been ‘knocking on the door’ to win the Federation all season, recording good positions in all the previous three races. He has now scored his first goal of the season and topped the Okehampton Federation result, winning 1st, 5th, 17th Federation. I spoke to Stuart after the race and he said, ‘the Federation winner was my good Raymond Ceulemans yearling roundabout blue cock, ‘Harry 048’ and has every race this year, being bred by my good friend Gary Young. He came really well on the day and I must say he seems to like Okehampton! He won the Three Borders Federation at the same race point in 2024 and has also won 2nd club, 9th Federation Wincanton. He is named, ‘Harry 048’ after my young son Harry and is raced on the Widowhood system. He is a bit special!’ Stuart was the 2024 Three Borders Federation points champion and won many premier positions, including four times 1st Federation to win that title. On the retirement of our long time standing Federation secretary, Bryan Poulton, at the last AGM, Stuart Emans took on the position and I must say is doing a brilliant job. Well done on your latest Federation win and thank for all your good work, Stuart! The Ashridge ‘Master’, Terry Goodsell, had a brilliant race from Okehampton, winning 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th Federation and was only beaten on decimals for the top spot. Terry and I go back to the late 1970’s and he has always a brilliant pigeon racer, winning the Federation points champion several times over the years. Terry is always the man to look out for on race checking night! Brilliant pigeon racing by all! The first ten in the Okehampton Federation result were: 1) Stuart Emans 1474: 2) Terry Goodsell 1474: 3) Terry Goodsell 1474: 4) Terry Goodsell 1474: 5) Stuart Emans 1473: 6) Tony Baughen 1472: 7) Terry Goodsell 1472: 😎 Frank & Sue Carson 1467: 9) Tony Baughen 1467: 10) Tony Baughen 1464. This was race number four of the season and at this point the Mitch & Merton club are leading for the ‘Federation Points Trophy’ with 15 points, with the Ashridge club being R/U on 14 points. Stuart Emans enjoyed a brilliant 2024 season racing in the Three Borders Federation. He recorded many premier positions; including four times 1st Federation and finished up winning the ‘Individual Points Trophy’, and is the 2024 Federation champion. Stuart is a fireman by profession and has a very busy family life, and has only a very limited time for his pigeon racing. He is smashing man and with his very limited time for his sport, to win this trophy is a great and deserving achievement! Although Stuart had won the Federation four times that year, he said his wonderful Gerald Delaney blue hen, ‘Jade 821’, had been so brilliant in the 2024 season and given him a lot of pleasure, winning 2nd Federation Okehampton, 3rd Federation Wincanton, 5th Federation Wincanton and 15th Federation Honiton. This is Stuart’s 2024 performance in the Federation: (Old Birds) 3rd, 18th, 19th, 20th Federation Wincanton, 5th, 6th Federation Wincanton, 1st, 2nd Federation Okehampton, 15th Federation Honiton, 10th Federation Wincanton, 13th, 22nd Federation Honiton, 13th, 23rd Federation Wadebridge, 1st Federation Honiton, 12th, 13th, 15th Federation Truro, (Young Birds) 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th Federation Wincanton, 14th, 18th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd Federation Wincanton, 1st, 2nd. 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 25th Federation Blandford, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th Federation Honiton. Brilliant pigeon racing! Stuart Emans lives in Sutton and he started up in the pigeon racing sport in 2008, and has won the Federation several time through the years, the highlight was winning 1st Three Borders Federation, 2nd Combine Bergerac and winning the Federation ‘Channel Averages’. Because of family and work commitments he had to pack up his pigeons for five year and restarted up in 2023 with young birds from his good friends Gary Young and Gerald Delaney. The 2024 season had seen Stuart race those yearlings with outstanding success. He pairs up in in February and races his fourteen cocks and seven hens on the roundabout system. His smart 24ft loft is set up for ETS trapping and is made up of a section for the old cocks, another for the young birds and the roundabout hens are housed in an aviary. He is not interested in fancy pedigrees or eye sign when selecting breeding pigeons and maintains the basket is the only way to find out if a pigeon is any good or not. Stuart gives his birds about ten training tosses up to 27 miles before the first race and then they get two exercise sessions every day around the loft once racing starts. All the races are fed on Stuart’s own widowhood mixture, which he makes up himself and the racers are never broke down. The 2025 season has seen Stuart take on the Three Borders Federation secretary office and is making a great job of it. Well done on your first Federation win of the season and thanks for all your good work, Stuart! A lad who is worthy of a special mention is Tony Baughen of the Ashridge club, who has only broke his ‘Novice Status’, by winning his first pigeon race in the 2024 season. He has come out with all guns blazing this season, recoding several top positions, including 1st club, 2nd Federation Honiton and now, 6th, 9th, 10th, 19th, 20th Federation Okehampton. Well done to Tony! I think next time I write about the Baughen loft, it will be about Tony’s first Federation winner! The full article to appear in the BHW shortly.
